Shouts of “Happy Birthday, Marine!” and “Semper Fi!” filled the air last Saturday as thousands of Marines converged at Cookie’s Tavern on 10th & Oregon Avenue to celebrate the 232nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps. And since the nativity of the Corps began in a colonial Philadelphia bar at The Tun Tavern on Nov. 10, 1775, it is so very fitting to have this remarkable annual event take place in a South Philadelphia bar.

Synonymous with the event is the late James R. “Daddy Wags” Wagner, requiescat in pace 2002. His daughter Marion Wagner’s face lights up as bright as a moonbeam at the mention of her legendary father’s name. “This is all word of mouth,” she informs me as she waves her arms east and west. “First it was two, then 10, then 100, then 1000! It just grew, maybe 2000 today.” What would your father impart upon us if he were still in the physical world? I ask. “Freedom is not free. He always said and meant those words. My father wanted every American to know that.”

The first Marine Birthday was celebrated in 1923 at Fort Mifflin, but I’m curious about the origin of the teeming sea of Red and Gold on Oregon Avenue. Charlie Simpson, Wagner’s cousin, was there from the very beginning. “This bar, Cookie’s Tavern, originally belonged to Wag’s uncle, Bill ‘Cookie’ Cook. We were a few years out of the Marine Corps. I walked into Cookie’s on Nov. 10, 1969 and I saw Wags there all by himself, having a beer. He said, ‘Let’s drink a beer to the Marines’ birthday. We should do this again the next year but tell everyone we know.’ So it went from two to 10 to what you see today; that’s how it started and then grew.” In 1977, Wager bought the bar but kept the name in honor of his uncle and officially declared the birthday party as an annual event.

Deputy Inspector Tony Boyle and retired-from-South Detective Joe O’Hara, along with attorney Mike Wallace, were friends with Daddy Wags for more than 30 years. “It was 1978. I was patrolling the area in the 402 wagon. I knew something was going on, on Alder Street,” Inspector Boyle relates. “So I stopped. There were no complaints or anything. Wags came out of the bar with a first anniversary t-shirt and a mug and gave it to me. I still have the t-shirt.” O’Hara comes up with a great idea: “Have the shirt framed and hang it in a place of honor.” Wallace opens up about the fraternal familiarity he’s experienced. “Wags was my brother, always will be my brother. He always said, ‘If you want to be a bear, be a grizzly.’” In the crowd I saw Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient Jon R. Cavaiani. “I flew in from Columbia, Cal., an old gold-mining town, population 55,000.” He wore the medal proudly around his neck and was surrounded by Marines who wanted a snapshot with him. To me, that medal is worth more than all the gold in those old mines.

The Army is also represented among his close friends. Richie Strohm, of Richard T. Strohm and Associates, goes way back. “In 1968, Wags wanted his Airborne Wings. He went to Fort Benning, Ga. I was his instructor. He passed the test. We’ve been friends ever since.” Retired Marine Captain Tom “Pittzy” Pitts instantly bonded with Wagner in 1997. “I told him about the Toys for Tots program and he dove right in. We found out he died 10 minutes before the Toys for Tots run that Saturday morning Nov. 5, 2002. I immediately got the microphone and re-named the race The Annual Daddy Wags Toys for Tots Run.”

After Wagner’s passing, his buddies spontaneously formed “Wag’s Platoon”. Southern Hall of Fame athlete Kenny Adams disclosed that no formal contract with the city was ever had for the party. “The police re-routed traffic, but that was about it. We wanted to get and keep the City involved. The Platoon got together at Marion’s to make sure the party stayed alive. I went to John Dougherty of Local 98 and told him of our needs. Now Doc always gives toys to the Toys for Tots program there and was very supportive. I, along with Mary-Rita D’Alessandro, became liaisons with the city. We got the stage, sound system, port-a-potties and trash pick-up permits.”

Thirty years later, the celebration has taken a life of its own, and is going strong. Around the world Marines celebrate their day, but only in Philadelphia will you find the spirit of the Tun Tavern in Cookie’s Tavern thriving with esprit de corps. Oorah!

05/25/2014 Civil War "Silent Sentry" Re-dedication/Parade - On May 25, 2014, the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery will hold a public ceremony rededicating the “Silent Sentry,” an historic bronze statue of a Civil War soldier at parade rest, first dedicated in 1883 at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Southwest Philadelphia. For nearly 100 years, the “Silent Sentry” watched over the gravesites of over ninety Union Veterans at Mount Moriah.. In the 1970s, the 700-pound, 7’2” statue was removed from its base in an attempted theft. It was recovered and repaired by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), who maintained the monument for decades with the assistance of the Laran Bronze Foundry. In recent years, efforts were made to find a suitable public location for the “Silent Sentry,” in keeping with its original purpose. In 2013, MOLLUS approved its relocation to Laurel Hill Cemetery, where it will resume its duty in guarding the resting places of Veterans of America’s Civil War. To date, the Friends of Laurel Hill have raised nearly $40,000 in charitable donations from dedicated citizens, public charities and fraternal organizations to fund the costs of rigging and relocation; the construction, installation and inscription of an American granite base upon which the figure will rest; lighting; landscaping; commemorative materials; and the establishment of an endowment to provide for the maintenance and restoration of the monument. The Friends invite members of the public citizenry to join them in partnership with MOLLUS, the General Meade Society, supporting military organizations, and esteemed guests for the historic Rededication of the “Silent Sentry” at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Noon, rain or shine. Services will commence in traditional fashion, as gathered participants form a parade to the gravesite of General George Meade, victor of Gettysburg, for a brief ceremony in annual observance of Memorial Day. The first Memorial Day commemoration in Philadelphia took place in 1868 at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The parade will then reform and proceed to the plot of the Grand Army of the Republic Meade Post #1, new location of the “Silent Sentry,” for a seated ceremony that will culminate with the unveiling of the monument. Keynote speakers include Brigadier General Wilbur E. Wolf III, Deputy Commanding General, 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania National Guard; Richard Wood Snowden, great great grandson of Colonel A. Loudon Snowden, who delivered the keynote address at the first dedication of the “Silent Sentry” in 1883; and Waldron Kintzing Post II, Commander-in-Chief of MOLLUS. The day will conclude with beer and light luncheon refreshments. Commemorative items, including 9.5” resin replicas of the monument created by nationally renowned sculptor, Andrew Chernak, will be available for sale. A $5/person donation will be requested at the door, and will include a copy of the commemorative program booklet and post-ceremony beer and refreshments. Credit cards will be accepted for payments of $10 or more. The ceremony will run approximately two hours, and will take place outdoors. Attendees are advised to prepare appropriately for the weather. Comfortable shoes are strongly...

The Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America are co-presenting the 34th National Veterans Wheelchair Games.  Over 600 athletes from around the United States and Great Britain will be participating. The first National Veterans Wheelchair Games were held in 1981 at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. That year, 74 veterans from 14 states competed in sports ranging from table tennis and billiards, to swimming and weightlifting. Those first games established an enduring trait that has characterized the event ever since. The now 600+ veterans who choose to compete demonstrate the continued popularity. Competitive events at the 34th National Veterans Wheelchair Games include air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field events, handcycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, nine-ball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting and weightlifting Athletes compete in all events against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age. This information has been gathered/condensed from the VA and PVA websites and Volunteer mtg handouts on 3/23.SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Click here to view Sponsorship Levels. 09/06/2014 Break A Guinness World Record Event - “Largest Group Stop, Drop & Roll Demonstration” - WTES’ Break A Guinness World Record Event - “Largest Group Stop, Drop & Roll Demonstration” Location: Westampton Sports Complex - 315 Bridge Street Westampton, NJ. Time: Family Fun 12:00pm-4:00pm / Record Attempt 2:00pm. Preregister: http://www.formstack.com/forms/?1620083-3fccSex24W Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/wtes27  Facebook Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/231480650345067/ This was intended to be a fun event at WTES’ 2014 Fire & Life Safety Open House. Unknown to us there was already a Guinness World Record for “Largest Group Stop, Drop & Roll”. We were excited to get 500-1000 people to do it. After applying for the opportunity, they informed us that the current record is held by the Indianapolis Fire Department in 2011 with 1,719 people. It has been a friendly back and forth between Iowa State Fire Marshal and Indianapolis Fire Department breaking each others records through past years. Here is a video of a record breaking attempt in Iowa back in 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfotog9Gpwo  . We have an awesome community as well as surrounding communities. We believe that we can jump in front of Iowa and Indiana and show them what its like to be Jersey Strong! Also, how neat it would be to be a part of history as well as a part of a Guinness World Record. If the record is broken each participant will be able to order a Guinness World Record Certificate!

Each mile of sweat and pain and each flag saluted, is to pay homage to one service member’s life and their family.  The last weekend of September we run across New Jersey to raise awareness for the lives of those who fought and died, to rejuvenate their memories, keep their spirits alive, to aid in the healing process of the New Jersey Gold Star families and to bring attention to New Jersey residents of the high cost of freedom.
