In keeping with that directive and forging ahead in our collective vision to celebrate the reality of recovery, New Jersey’s grassroots recovery support community are pleased to announce a family friendly statewide Recovery Rally event at the Rutgers Athletic Center (83 Rockafeller Road, Piscataway, New Jersey) on Saturday, September 20, 2014. The prevention, treatment and recovering communities are uniting to raise awareness, create synergies and serve as the “tipping point” for effectively addressing the disease of addiction. We anticipate this event will go far to offer hope to the suffering, demonstrate the reality of recovery from addiction and serve to eliminate the discrimination and stigma attached to this prevalent disease. As a socially conscious member of the community, you understand the positive impact an event like this can have on the lives of those in need. And we embrace your interest in making New Jersey a state where its people can live healthy and full lives, including freedom from the bondage of substance abuse. 09/27/2014 - 09/29/2014 MID-ATLANTIC POLICE & FIRE SURVIVORS' WEEKEND - Mid-Atlantic Police and Fire Survivors' Weekend (MAPFSW) is a series of events that recognize truly forgotten heroes: the survivors of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters, including family members and co-workers. It is a weekend in autumn when old friends get to see each other and new survivors become part of our close-knit family. This year's MAPFSW (our 15th annual event!) will take place from September 26 through 28, 2014. The weekend focuses on survivors from the following states: New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. However, in past years we have honored the requests of families that reside in our region and hosted families from Georgia and Colorado, in addition to those from the Mid-Atlantic region. We are also different in that we recognize survivors from not just the current year, but those that were killed in the line of duty from the past. The event is hosted annually by the North Wildwood Police Department and is held in the seashore resort of North Wildwood, New Jersey. For more information, call 609-522-2411 or e-mail info@midatlanticsurvivors.org. 10/05/2014 Firefighter Daniel Sweeney 5K Run & 1 mile Walk - Daniel Sweeney 5K + 1 mile walk. Sunday, Oct 5th. Pennypack Park, Pine Rd. Http://www.danielsweeneyfund.org . Firefighter Daniel Sweeney 5k Run Memorial Scholarship Fund <---click on link for details and registration form. Daniel Sweeney graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School in 2005. After deciding that he did not want to attend college at that time, he applied for the Philadelphia Fire Department and began the Fire Academy in July 2006. In February, 2007, he was assigned to Ladder 10 at Kensington and Castor Avenues. Early on Easter Monday morning, April 9, 2012, Ladder 10 was dispatched to a 5-alarm warehouse fire. After the fire was declared under control, Daniel and his company were checking the interior of a furniture store. While they were in the store, the warehouse wall collapsed, killing Daniel and his lieutenant. The Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Fund was established when kind-hearted citizens sent the family money. The purpose of the fund is to assist families whose children are attending an Archdiocesan high school. The Firefighter Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship is open to all students, without regard to race, sex, national origin or religious beliefs. Our only intent is to help families with the education of their children. A selection committee has been established and all scholarships will be awarded based on the financial need and merit of the applicants.
