Dachau Concentration Camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 10 miles northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. It opened in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler and was enlarged to include forced labor, and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. Among the liberators was Battle of the Bulge veteran Don Greenbaum of the US 7 Army, as a forward observer with the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion. These two ‘living historians’ will recount, in vivid detail, the horrors encountered at Dachau and their stories of survival. The History Channel has done an extensive documentary on their story and Mr. Gross and Mr. Greenbaum speak all over the country. These two AMERICAN TREASURES will be accompanied by Mr. Steven Gross and family members. American Legion Post #405 is truly blessed by the opportunity to witness history. Inurnment will be later at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. If interested in participating in FLag Line, meet at Four Chaplains Chapel Thursday 6:30pm and/or Friday 9:15am. John L. Harrison Jr., 96, of Philadelphia, a World War II veteran and Tuskegee Airman who went on to fly Air Force planes for more than two decades, died Wednesday, March 22, of old age at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. Born in Kansas and reared in Omaha, Neb., Mr. Harrison had an early infatuation with airplanes. “Johnny Boy, you can do anything anyone else does, but you have to prepare yourself,” his parents told him. He graduated from Omaha University, and did further study at the University of Southern California and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After reading about the first class of African American pilots to train for combat during World War II, Mr. Harrison signed up in February 1943 to join Class 43-K, composed entirely of black recruits. He served with the Army Air Corps, the predecessor of the Air Force, until 1946. The fliers encountered discrimination “based on the color of our skin,” he said in a September 2009 oral history, but the harsh treatment by white officers only heightened the men’s sense of camaraderie. They painted the tails of their planes red, becoming the famed Red Tails, and distinguished themselves in combat by fending off enemy aircraft that threatened Allied bombers. “We were Americans, we were young, and we wanted to defend our country, just like everyone else,” he said in the history, recorded at a Tuskegee Airmen’s air show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3i3IBOgasE Once Mr. Harrison completed basic training, he was promoted to second lieutenant, and advanced to specialized training on the B-25 Mitchell bomber and assigned to the 477th Medium Bombardment Group as a fighter pilot. He saw combat in Italy during World War II, and was among the Tuskegee Airmen who in 2007 were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush and Congress. After the war, he loved flying so much he stayed in the Air Force. He was the first African American pilot and flight commander to regularly fly passengers and cargo across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for the U.S. Military Air Transport Service. He crossed the Pacific 50 times, and the Atlantic 30 times, his resume indicates. In the early 1950s, Mr. Harrison was stationed in Hawaii, from which he flew to Japan, the Philippines, Wake Island, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia. In the mid-1950s, he flew to the Arctic, Greenland, and Iceland. He also piloted C-118 Liftmaster Transports to Scotland, Paris, Madrid, Cairo, and Saudi Arabia. In June 1963, Mr. Harrison retired from the Air Force...(click on event title for more info)

03/25/2017 - Local Hero Reception & An Evening with the Medal of Honor -(Event Location - Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, 1601 Valley Forge Road, Phoenixville, PA) The Medal of Honor represents the service and sacrifice of all who have worn our nation's uniform and the character traits of: courage, citizenship, commitment, sacrifice, integrity, and patriotism. These same character traits distinguish our recipients for the Local Hero Award. The Local Hero Reception will be highlighted by a multi-media program which fosters that distinguished legacy through the stories of two very unique recipients, World War II signalman Douglas A. Munro, United States Coast Guard and Vietnam War hero, Richard Etchberger, the Air Force’s most recent Medal of Honor recipient. Gary Williams and Cory Etchberger, Academic Directors for the Medal of Honor Legacy Program at Freedoms Foundation will present this dynamic event. Following “An Evening with the Medal of Honor”, the 2017 Local Hero Award will be presented to our two recipients: Chief Mark E. Talbot, Sr. has spearheaded the effort to transform the Norristown Police Department into a more focused and community oriented agency which has resulted in a substantial reduction of both Part 1 offences and violent crime. He has led the way in building trust between the local community and the police, creating an innovative and progressive policing method worthy of emulation. Richard Williams III, a student at Motivation (Magnet) High School, put his personal safety on the line when he defended his Personal Finance teacher in the midst of a fight on school grounds, resulting in five breaks to his jawbone and other injuries. The teacher was attempting to diffuse tensions between two neighboring schools, but the situation quickly escalated and focused on the teacher. Ricky and classmates selflessly and courageously stepped in and protected the teacher.(click on event title for more info)

03/25/2017 - March at Wildwood Vietnam Wall - Agent Orange -(Event Location - Wildwood Vietnam Wall, Burk and Ocean avenues, Wildwood, NJ) Veterans from Post 184, American Legion and Chapter 955, Vietnam Veterans of America, Wildwood, plan to host a rally March 25 at the Wildwood Vietnam Memorial Wall at 11 a.m.   Those organizations, joined by veterans and their families and extended families, bring awareness of the effects of toxic exposure to Agent Orange. That defoliant, widely used in the Vietnam War, has affected millions of veterans and is being investigated to have an adverse effect on the children and grandchildren of those veterans.  Also, the rally will focus on the health care that veterans are receiving from the Veterans Administration (VA) in Cape May County.  According to a release, veterans are often required to make the trip to Wilmington Del. or Philadelphia to get health care, often for just a 10-minute appointment.  The rally begins at the Wildwoods Vietnam Memorial Wall, Burk and Ocean avenues.  After some brief speeches, a motorcade will proceed to milepost 17 on the Garden State Parkway (Ocean View Rest Stop) where the second part of the rally will occur.  It is expected that the group will arrive there about 12:15 to 1 p.m. At that location, there is ample, safe off-highway parking.  The rally at that location will be held at the veterans memorial at the south end of the plaza. The event is being organized by Bill Davenport, president Chapter 955, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Harry Weimar, commander Post 184, American Legion.(click on event title for more info)

PA, S. NJ & N. DE) Captain Percival Drayton, (US Navy Deceased) will be speaking, in first person, at the West Point Society of Philadelphia at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, March 1. He will discuss his exploits upon the high seas and his unfortunate, imperceptible chance military encounter with his brother, Confederate Brigadier General, Thomas Drayton, at the Battle of Port Royal. He was promoted to Captain, US Navy in 1862, and was assigned to Admiral David Farragut's West Gulf Squadron, and commanded Farragut's flagship USS Hartford in the celebrated Naval assault and capture of Mobile Bay, Alabama on August 5, 1864. Mobile was the Confederacy's last major seaport open, on the Gulf of Mexico. The bay was heavily mined (tethered  mines were known as torpedoes at the time).   Farragut ordered his fleet to charge the bay. When one of the Union Monitors struck a mine and sank, the other Union ships began to retreat.  Farragut could see the ships pulling back from his high perch, where he was lashed to the rigging of his flagship, the USS Hartford.   "What's the trouble?" he shouted through his megaphone. "Torpedoes!" was shouted back by a forward lookout.   "Damn the torpedoes!" said Farragut, "Four bells - CAPTAIN DRAYTON, Full Speed ahead!   The bulk of the fleet then succeeded in entering the bay. The PowerPoint presentation will last approximately 45 minutes. There will be a short period for questions and answers and then refreshments. 02/25/2017 - Major Octavius Catto Ceremony -(Event Location - 6th & Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA, 6th & Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA) Octavius Catto (1839-1871), Saturday, February 25, at 10 a.m. – The ceremony honoring Octavius Catto will take place at 6th and Lombard Streets, Philadelphia. It is cosponsored by the Catto Society and the General Meade Society. All military units, period civilians, veterans and heritage groups are encouraged to participate. Colors, wreath and music are encouraged. Pennsylvania National Guard “Major Catto Award” Ceremony to follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Union League. For information contact Andy Waskie at 215-204-5452 or awaskie01@temple.edu. On October 10, 1871, Pennsylvania Militia Major Catto was murdered during a day of riots organized to stop African American from voting. More than 5,000 citizens attended Catto’s funeral procession, the second largest in the city since Lincoln’s. He was an esteemed teacher, principal and civil rights activist. He will soon not only have a prominent place in the city’s history, but also outside Philadelphia City Hall. New York artist Branly Cadet has unveiled his design for a memorial. The sculpture, which will be placed along the southwestern apron of City Hall, will be the first among the city’s collection dedicated solely to an African American. It will explore aspects of Catto’s life that include his efforts to desegregate Philadelphia’s streetcars and to have the state ratify the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave all men — regardless of race — the right to vote. More than $1.6 million was raised for the tribute, with funding from the city and other partners. Born in 1839 in South Carolina, Catto’s parents moved the family to Philadelphia, where he obtained a good education. He worked tirelessly for the all men to get the right to vote. He successfully led efforts to integrate streetcars in Philadelphia in 1867. Catto was 32 years old when he was gunned down on Oct. 10, 1871, while on his way to a polling site in South Philadelphia to serve in his official capacity as a National Guardsman assigned to protect newly registered African-American voters during a political riot. “I wanted to get a sense of the space, physical location, and what his life was like,” the sculptor added. “He was an historical figure who had an impact on my life. Because of him, I can walk around freely and I can vote, so I thought it was important to highlight these two particular aspects of his life for the memorial. From there, I came up with the final design for the sculpture, which not only reflects Catto’s accomplishments, but his life.” The memorial consists of a ground level collection of sculptural elements including a bronze statue of Catto, a granite abstraction of a 1860s horse-car and a representation of a mid-19th century ballot box. The granite forms of the horse-car and the ballot box will each be engraved and adorned with text and images of Catto’s various accomplishments in education, the military, sports, activism and leadership. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2017.(click on event title for more info)

WWII Iwo Jima Marine Veteran, Bob Scullin, from Pennsauken, NJ passed away on Feb 3rd. He served two enlistments in the USMC during WWII and Korean War and was wounded in action. Read article about Bob’s service from the Philadelphia Inquirer below; The nightmares linger 67 years later, the carnage of Iwo Jima remains fresh for N.J. Marine. By Edward Colimore, Inquirer Staff Writer - February 19, 2012 Sixty-seven years later, he still has dreams of that dark, volcanic island - and the unimaginable horrors he witnessed there. He recalls a friend shot through the head, an American flag fluttering atop a mountain, and the sharp sting of a bullet passing through his jaw. Pvt. Bob Scullin was 19 when he landed on Feb. 19, 1945, with tens of thousands of other Marines on Iwo Jima, whose very name conjures images of ferocious combat. Twenty-seven service members - 22 Marines and five Navy seamen - received the Medal of Honor for their actions during a two-month battle that claimed the lives of 4,590 Americans and more than 20,000 Japanese. "I think about it all the time," Scullin, 86, of Pennsauken, said. "Sometimes, I have dreams about it." In a landing craft splashing through the waves toward the Japanese island, "we didn't know what was going to happen," he said. "It was scary. "We tried to encourage each other, saying, 'You're going to make it! You're going to make it!' " A member of the 27th Marines, Fifth Division, in the first wave, Scullin was toting an M-1 rifle and 60 pounds of mortar shells tucked in a vest. He and others who followed in the second wave were greeted by an eerie silence when they hit the beach. "The third wave is when we caught it," Scullin said solemnly. The defenders let loose with artillery, mortar, and machine gun and small arms fire just when the beach was most crowded with Marines and their equipment. "You tried to hide by digging a foxhole, but it would just fill up" because of the volcanic ash, he said. "A lot of people were shot. "A friend of mine in the mortar platoon was shot through the head," he said. "They [Japanese] had every square inch of the island covered" with fire. The Marines had to move out. "We were only on the beach a couple hours before...(click on event title for more info)

12/09/2016 -Union League - Dining Out Union League - Dining Out -(Event Location - Philadelphia Union League, 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA) The practice of DINING IN or Dining Out (with spouses) is thought to have formally begun in 16th-century England, though some records indicate that militaries have held formal dinners as far back as the Roman Legions. The Vikings held formal ceremonies to honor and celebrate battles and heroes. During the 18th century, the British Military incorporated the practice of formal dining into their regimental mess system. Customs and rules of the mess were soon institutionalized rules, known as the "Queen's Regulations". The mess night or "DINING IN/OUT" became a tradition in all British regiments. The Americans, taking many of their traditions from the British military, held mess nights starting in the 18th century and the tradition continues today at the Union League. The practice of DINING IN/OUT continues at the Union League the night before the Army/Navy and is the Armed Services Council's Premier Event. All Union League members, guests and non-Union League members are invited to attend a military DINING OUT in honor of the Army/Navy Classic to be held the following day at M & T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD.
