07/28/2016 - 07/31/2016 Traveling Vietnam Wall - "The Wall That Heals" comes to East Brandywine PA

The Wall That Heals is coming to East Brandywine Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) and East Brandywine Township will play host this summer to The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Part of a national tour, the replica memorial wall and accompanying mobile education center will be on display throughout the day and night, from July 28th to July 31st at East Brandywine Township Community Park, 440 Dilworth Road. Since its debut in 1996, more than two million people have visited The Wall That Heals sites. It has made stops in nearly 400 U.S. communities in addition to a tour of Ireland and a visit to Canada. Hosting The Wall That Heals provides area residents with a multi-day educational experience on the history of the Vietnam era and The Wall. The exhibit includes a mobile education center comprised of: photos of service members whose names are found on The Wall; letters and memorabilia left at The Wall in D.C.; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the conflict in Vietnam. The exhibits tell the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era surrounding the conflict, and are designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a historical and cultural context. The Wall That Heals will be open 24 hours a day from July 28th to July 31st. There is no charge for admission. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) coordinates local stops of The Wall That Heals and the accompanying mobile Education Center. The current schedule and more information can be found at www.thewallthatheals.org. The 2016 national The Wall That Heals tour is generously sponsored by: USAA, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Trust, FedEx, and Geico. About The Half-Scale Replica The replica Wall is approximately 250 feet in length, and like the original Memorial is erected in a chevron-shape. The replica is constructed of powder-coated aluminum, supported by an aluminum frame, and is made up of 24 individual panels, each containing six columns of names. The names on The Wall That Heals replicate the names on The Wall in Washington, D.C. As on The Wall, the names are listed alphabetically by day of casualty. Beginning at the center/apex, the names start on the East Wall (right-hand side} working their way out to the end of that wing, picking up again at the far end of the West Wall (left-hand side) and working their way back in to the center/apex. Thus, the beginning and ending of the conflict are joined at the center, signifying an epoch in American history. The Wall That Heals is transported from community to community by a 53-foot, fifth-wheel trailer with cases built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center that tells the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in American history. 08/15/2016 Unheralded Valor: On the Battlefield and on the "Wall" - Terry Williamson Guest Speaker

August 15 - Unheralded Valor: On the Battlefield and on the ‘Wall’ Former Marine infantry officer, Terry Williamson, who served as a platoon commander and company commander in Vietnam during 1968-69 will be the guest speaker. His talk, “Unheralded Valor: On the Battlefield and on the ‘Wall’,” will provide an up close look at the strategy and personal stories of Marines during one fierce clash in 1969 and how the courage of ordinary service members like those Marines, is captured by the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Terry was awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V” and left the service as a captain. A public relations consultant, Terry is president of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the newly named president of the Philadelphia Veterans Parade Inc. In the former role, he led a capital campaign to improve the Memorial at Penns Landing to deter vandalism and create greater awareness of the site, which honors the memory of 648 Philadelphians lost in the war. He has worked as a journalist and was a speechwriter and administrative assistant to Gov. Dick Thornburgh, followed by a stint as press secretary to then-District Attorney Ronald D. Castille. “Vietnam was a war of footnotes for many who fought there, devoid of famous battles or well-known campaigns. But the combat that was the everyday lot of the Marine infantryman could be just as deadly and intense. The Honor Guard will be doing the Rifle Volley & Taps. The Ceremony will start at 11:00 AM. A little History on these soldiers, An article states, these unrecognized men led President Lincoln's Funeral Procession & pursued his assassin. Fought alongside the most elite regiments. 54th & 55th Massachusetts & others. Exceptionally served is documented in library books at the Monroe Vet Admin Director of 30 years passed down their service, battle records& muster rolls. Civil War Veterans built Little Bethel Church on Third Street in Stroudsburg in the late 1860s. Shari Chambers identifies the church's founder and original pastor, the Rev. Samuel Huff, as her full-blooded Lenni Lenape ancestor. Chambers said Huff and other Native American and African American families built the church, which was abandoned in the 1980s and fell into disrepair. The Little Bethel Historical Association has been trying to restore the former church building in recent years with the help of contractors, volunteers and community donations. Chambers originally envisioned a granite marker, 10 feet high by 4 feet wide by 4 feet deep, bearing a plaque honoring the Huff and other families who founded the church, but it will now be a plaque mounted on a pole. Stroudsburg Borough officials recently told her the plaque is allowed on borough property, which in this case is the sidewalk near the curb in front of the church.
