Fearful Odds Is A Haunting Memoir Of Combat In Vietnam And The Consequences of War:  6:00 pm

Fearful Odds Is A Haunting Memoir Of Combat In Vietnam And The Consequences of War Chuck Newhall is, by any material measure, wildly successful. Along with two partners he founded a venture capital company that raised more than $14 billion and helped start 800 companies with more than half a trillion in revenues. Those companies helped create balloon angioplasty, interleukins, chirally pure pharmaceuticals, Medicare and Medicaid case management, epigenetics, the internet, the Ethernet and high-speed data communications. But through all the years of high-pressure deal making Newhall kept a secret. During business meetings and at social events he would be nearly overwhelmed by flashbacks to a darker, more dangerous time, flashbacks so vivid he would grip the edge of the table to keep control of himself. His memoir Fearful Odds is not only the story of what caused his PTSD and the nearly devastating impact it had on his life, it is also an inspiring story of how one man overcame his psychological injuries. It is, in the end, a story of hope and triumph with lessons for the millions of veterans of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Fearful Odds is Chuck’s story, honoring those he served alongside in combat in Vietnam…and especially to those who did not return home. American Legion Post #405 is truly blessed by the opportunity to witness history.   All are welcome to attend – Civilian, Guests, Retired, Reserve & Active military.   Dress code for men: Business attire.   Please RSVP to: awaskie@temple.edu – Dr. Andy Waskie Philadelphia Union League, 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA

Survival of the Holocaust and Dachau Concentration Camp:  6:00 pm

Benjamin Franklin - Legion Post 405 at the Union League announces a special historical program on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 6:00 pm at the Union League Mr. Ernie Gross survived the Holocaust and Dachau Concentration Camp and was liberated by US Army forces in April, 1945. Dachau Concentration Camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 10 miles northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. It opened in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler and was enlarged to include forced labor, and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. Among the liberators was Battle of the Bulge veteran Don Greenbaum of the US 7 Army, as a forward observer with the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion. These two ‘living historians’ will recount, in vivid detail, the horrors encountered at Dachau and their stories of survival. The History Channel has done an extensive documentary on their story and Mr. Gross and Mr. Greenbaum speak all over the country. These two AMERICAN TREASURES will be accompanied by Mr. Steven Gross and family members. American Legion Post #405 is truly blessed by the opportunity to witness history. All are welcome to attend – Civilians, Guests, Retired, Reserve & Active military. Dress code for men: Business attire. Please RSVP to: awaskie@temple.edu – Dr. Andy Waskie     Philadelphia Union League, 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA

Funeral for WWII Tuskegee Airman:  All Day

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS: A viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 30, and again from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 31, at the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, 1201 Constitution Ave., Navy Yard Building 649, Philadelphia, will be followed by an 11:30 a.m. Funeral Mass on Friday, also at the chapel. Inurnment will be later at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. If interested in participating in FLag Line, meet at Four Chaplains Chapel Thursday 6:30pm and/or Friday 9:15am. John L. Harrison Jr., 96, of Philadelphia, a World War II veteran and Tuskegee Airman who went on to fly Air Force planes for more than two decades, died Wednesday, March 22, of old age at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. Born in Kansas and reared in Omaha, Neb., Mr. Harrison had an early infatuation with airplanes. “Johnny Boy, you can do anything anyone else does, but you have to prepare yourself,” his parents told him. He graduated from Omaha University, and did further study at the University of Southern California and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After reading about the first class of African American pilots to train for combat during World War II, Mr. Harrison signed up in February 1943 to join Class 43-K, composed entirely of black recruits. He served with the Army Air Corps, the predecessor of the Air Force, until 1946. The fliers encountered discrimination “based on the color of our skin,” he said in a September 2009 oral history, but the harsh treatment by white officers only heightened the men’s sense of camaraderie. They painted the tails of their planes red, becoming the famed Red Tails, and distinguished themselves in combat by fending off enemy aircraft that threatened Allied bombers. “We were Americans, we were young, and we wanted to defend our country, just like everyone else,” he said in the history, recorded at a Tuskegee Airmen’s air show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3i3IBOgasE Once Mr. Harrison completed basic training, he was promoted to second lieutenant, and advanced to specialized training on the B-25 Mitchell bomber and assigned to the 477th Medium Bombardment Group as a fighter pilot. He saw combat in Italy during World War II, and was among the Tuskegee Airmen who in 2007 were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush and Congress. After the war, he loved flying so much he stayed in the Air Force. He was the... Chapel of the Four Chaplains – The Navy Yard – Bldg. 649, 1201 Constitution Avenue, Philadelphia, PA

Local Hero Reception & An Evening with the Medal of Honor:  6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Medal of Honor represents the service and sacrifice of all who have worn our nation's uniform and the character traits of: courage, citizenship, commitment, sacrifice, integrity, and patriotism. These same character traits distinguish our recipients for the Local Hero Award. The Local Hero Reception will be highlighted by a multi-media program which fosters that distinguished legacy through the stories of two very unique recipients, World War II signalman Douglas A. Munro, United States Coast Guard and Vietnam War hero, Richard Etchberger, the Air Force’s most recent Medal of Honor recipient. Gary Williams and Cory Etchberger, Academic Directors for the Medal of Honor Legacy Program at Freedoms Foundation will present this dynamic event. Following “An Evening with the Medal of Honor”, the 2017 Local Hero Award will be presented to our two recipients: Chief Mark E. Talbot, Sr. has spearheaded the effort to transform the Norristown Police Department into a more focused and community oriented agency which has resulted in a substantial reduction of both Part 1 offences and violent crime. He has led the way in building trust between the local community and the police, creating an innovative and progressive policing method worthy of emulation. Richard Williams III, a student at Motivation (Magnet) High School, put his personal safety on the line when he defended his Personal Finance teacher in the midst of a fight on school grounds, resulting in five breaks to his jawbone and other injuries. The teacher was attempting to diffuse tensions between two neighboring schools, but the situation quickly escalated and focused on the teacher. Ricky and classmates selflessly and courageously stepped in and protected the teacher. Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, 1601 Valley Forge Road, Phoenixville, PA

March at Wildwood Vietnam Wall - Agent Orange:  11:00 am

Veterans from Post 184, American Legion and Chapter 955, Vietnam Veterans of America, Wildwood, plan to host a rally March 25 at the Wildwood Vietnam Memorial Wall at 11 a.m.   Those organizations, joined by veterans and their families and extended families, bring awareness of the effects of toxic exposure to Agent Orange. That defoliant, widely used in the Vietnam War, has affected millions of veterans and is being investigated to have an adverse effect on the children and grandchildren of those veterans.  Also, the rally will focus on the health care that veterans are receiving from the Veterans Administration (VA) in Cape May County.  According to a release, veterans are often required to make the trip to Wilmington Del. or Philadelphia to get health care, often for just a 10-minute appointment.  The rally begins at the Wildwoods Vietnam Memorial Wall, Burk and Ocean avenues.  After some brief speeches, a motorcade will proceed to milepost 17 on the Garden State Parkway (Ocean View Rest Stop) where the second part of the rally will occur.  It is expected that the group will arrive there about 12:15 to 1 p.m. At that location, there is ample, safe off-highway parking.  The rally at that location will be held at the veterans memorial at the south end of the plaza. The event is being organized by Bill Davenport, president Chapter 955, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Harry Weimar, commander Post 184, American Legion. Meet Civil War Union Navy Captain Percival Drayton (USN - Deceased):  11:30 am

Captain Percival Drayton, (US Navy Deceased) will be speaking, in first person, at the West Point Society of Philadelphia at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, March 1. He will discuss his exploits upon the high seas and his unfortunate, imperceptible chance military encounter with his brother, Confederate Brigadier General, Thomas Drayton, at the Battle of Port Royal. He was promoted to Captain, US Navy in 1862, and was assigned to Admiral David Farragut's West Gulf Squadron, and commanded Farragut's flagship USS Hartford in the celebrated Naval assault and capture of Mobile Bay, Alabama on August 5, 1864. Mobile was the Confederacy's last major seaport open, on the Gulf of Mexico. The bay was heavily mined (tethered  mines were known as torpedoes at the time).   Farragut ordered his fleet to charge the bay. When one of the Union Monitors struck a mine and sank, the other Union ships began to retreat.  Farragut could see the ships pulling back from his high perch, where he was lashed to the rigging of his flagship, the USS Hartford.   "What's the trouble?" he shouted through his megaphone. "Torpedoes!" was shouted back by a forward lookout.   "Damn the torpedoes!" said Farragut, "Four bells - CAPTAIN DRAYTON, Full Speed ahead!   The bulk of the fleet then succeeded in entering the bay. The PowerPoint presentation will last approximately 45 minutes. There will be a short period for questions and answers and then refreshments. Location: Chart House Restaurant - 555 S Christopher Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19147. Please RSVP - http://philadelphiawps.com/ Chart House Restaurant, Penns Landing, 555 South Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Major Octavius Catto Ceremony:  10:00 am

Octavius Catto (1839-1871), Saturday, February 25, at 10 a.m. – The ceremony honoring Octavius Catto will take place at 6th and Lombard Streets, Philadelphia. It is cosponsored by the Catto Society and the General Meade Society. All military units, period civilians, veterans and heritage groups are encouraged to participate. Colors, wreath and music are encouraged. Pennsylvania National Guard “Major Catto Award” Ceremony to follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Union League. For information contact Andy Waskie at 215-204-5452 or awaskie01@temple.edu. On October 10, 1871, Pennsylvania Militia Major Catto was murdered during a day of riots organized to stop African American from voting. More than 5,000 citizens attended Catto’s funeral procession, the second largest in the city since Lincoln’s. He was an esteemed teacher, principal and civil rights activist. He will soon not only have a prominent place in the city’s history, but also outside Philadelphia City Hall. New York artist Branly Cadet has unveiled his design for a memorial. The sculpture, which will be placed along the southwestern apron of City Hall, will be the first among the city’s collection dedicated solely to an African American. It will explore aspects of Catto’s life that include his efforts to desegregate Philadelphia’s streetcars and to have the state ratify the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave all men — regardless of race — the right to vote. More than $1.6 million was raised for the tribute, with funding from the city and other partners. Born in 1839 in South Carolina, Catto’s parents moved the family to Philadelphia, where he obtained a good education. He worked tirelessly for the all men to get the right to vote. He successfully led efforts to integrate streetcars in Philadelphia in 1867. Catto was 32 years old when he was gunned down on Oct. 10, 1871, while on his way to a polling site in South Philadelphia to serve in his official capacity as a National Guardsman assigned to protect newly registered African-American voters during a political riot. “I wanted to get a sense of the space, physical location, and what his life was like,” the sculptor added. “He was an historical figure who had an impact on my life. Because of him, I can walk around freely and I can vote, so I thought it was important to highlight these two particular aspects of his life for the memorial. From there, I came up... 6th & Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA, 6th & Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA

Iwo Jima Revisited:  6:00 pm

Program Title - IWO JIMA - REVISITED On February 19, 1945, the first of an eventual 70,000 U. S. Marines landed on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima to face over 20,000 determined Imperial Japanese defenders. By the time it was over thirty-six days later, Americans had suffered over 26,000 casualties, of which more than 6,800 were killed. Japanese losses were staggering: of the nearly 21,000 Defenders only 216 were captured alive. In March 2015, as part of the joint American-Japanese 70th anniversary “Reunion of Honor” ceremonies, independent historians Steven J. Wright and William C. Holdsworth visited the island with more than fifty veterans of the battle – including one Japanese survivor, Tsuruji Akikusa – and the last surviving Iwo Jima Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams. Steve and Bill present their experiences in their program: "Return to Iwo Jima". Guest Speakers: Steven J. Wright bio: Steve Wright is the author of two books and more than 300 articles and reviews on the American Civil War. He holds advanced degrees in American History and American Indian Studies, and Library and Information Science. As a member of Del Val, Steve is an instructor at the Civil War Institute at Manor College. In addition to Del Val, Steve is a member and past president of the Old Baldy CWRT, and has been Curator of Collections at the Civil War Library & Museum on Pine Street, a Park Ranger at Gettysburg and Independence National Historical Park.
