10/01/2017 - Suicide Prevention Walk - A NJ Mothers Story of her Veteran Sons Suicide - Boogie Exconde:  8:30 am - 1:00 pm
Our friend Bob Daniello, who is the Godfather of a young Navy Veteran, "Boogie" Exconde, who committed suicide at the young age of 22, shares his Godson’s story and walks with Out of the Darkness on October 1st in Philadelphia to raise awareness and help end suicide.   In part, Boogie’s mother writes this about the events leading up to her sons suicide… “Sadly on January 1, 2017 at approximately 6:35 PM, he took his own life.  What we didn’t know at that time was while he was out at sea there was a severe accident with some sailors.  Boogie and the rest of the crash and salvage team were the first to respond.  Part of my son’s job was to pull victims from the wreckage.  The victim he had assisted died in his arms before medics could arrive.  This was the first time he witnessed anyone die.  Per the CACO assigned to his case, my son took the death to heart and was having difficulty sleeping and handling the situation.  He wasn’t able to call his wife or anyone from his family because they were out at sea.  Boogie was supposed to be home on December 18th, his wife heard from him everyday until then.  While his other shipmates were home we had no clue where he was at.  The Navy had put him on a 72 hour watch.  They prescribed him medication to help with the PTSD that they said he was suffering from.  One of the side effects of the drug is suicidal thoughts.  The CACO advised us off the record that the Navy shouldn’t have released him on leave without monitoring the medication.  A lot of this wasn’t anything we knew prior to New Years Day.  He was getting ready to deploy on January 21st for 10 months.  He was able to spend the holidays with all of us and everything seemed fine for the most part.  You could tell he was a little scared about leaving for so long but nothing seemed out of the ordinary up until that day…” To read Boogie’s full story , click here   Bob Daniello and 44 others are with “Team Boogie’s Sailors” and will walk on October 1st for Suicide Prevention and Awareness in honor of Boogie. Please consider donating to Bob’s goal by clicking here, or Boogie’s mothers goal by clicking here, or join the “Team Boogie’s Sailors” and do the walk with them! All donations are 100% tax dedcutible.   The suicide numbers are staggering, especially for our veterans and first responders – please, if you or anyone you know that is a Veteran or First Responder, and is suffering, please reach out the Veterans Crisis Line, Cop2Cop of the National Suicide Prevention hotline.     The Cop 2 Cop hotline 1-866-COP-2COP is staffed by retired officers who are licensed Clinical Social Workers     Philadelphia Art Museum, 26th and Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA

10/28/2017 - Medal of Honor Monument Dedication SFC Fred Zabitosky:  11:00 am
On the 19th of February, 1968, at the height of the TET Offensive during the Vietnam War, Sergeant First Class Fred Zabitosky earned his nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. For decades there has been a framed photo of SFC Zabitosky, along with a photogrph of an Army Medal of Honor, in the vestibule of the Ewing Township Muinicipal Building, where Zabitosky is from. Unfortunately, Zabitosky passed away in January of 1996 at the age of 53. Mayor Bert Steinmann and township officials have long felt that more needed to be done to show the respect and gratitude owed to SFC Zabitosky and to all the brave men and women of Ewing who have selflessly put their futures on hold, some sacrificing their future entirely, to answer their country's call. Please join us on Saturday, October 28, 2017, for a dedication ceremony for SPC Zabitosky's new memorial display which will be at the Municipal Building at 11am. All are encouraged to come out and honor this hero and all the other town veterans for their service and sacrifices. Fred William Zabitosky (October 27, 1942 – January 18, 1996) Service Years 1959 - 1981 Rank and Organization: Sergeant First Class (then S/Sgt.), U.S. Army, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Place and Date: Republic of Vietnam, 19 February 1968 Citation "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sfc. Zabitosky, U.S. Army, distinguished himself while serving as an assistant team leader of a 9-man Special Forces long-range reconnaissance patrol. Sfc. Zabitosky's patrol was operating deep within enemy-controlled territory when they were attacked by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army unit. Sfc. Zabitosky rallied his team members, deployed them into defensive positions, and, exposing himself to concentrated enemy automatic weapons fire, directed their return fire. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Sfc. Zabitosky ordered his patrol to move to a landing zone for helicopter extraction while he covered their withdrawal with rifle fire and grenades. Rejoining the patrol under increasing enemy pressure, he positioned each man in a tight perimeter defense and continually moved from man to man, encouraging them and controlling their defensive fire. Mainly due to his example, the outnumbered patrol maintained its precarious position until the arrival of tactical air support and a helicopter extraction team. As the rescue helicopters arrived, the determined North Vietnamese pressed their attack. Sfc. Zabitosky repeatedly exposed himself to their fire to adjust suppressive helicopter gunship fire around the landing zone. After boarding 1 of the rescue helicopters, he positioned himself in the door delivering fire on the enemy as the ship took off. The helicopter was engulfed in a hail of bullets and Sfc. Zabitosky was thrown from the craft as it spun out of control and crashed. Recovering consciousness, he ignored his extremely painful injuries and moved to the flaming wreckage. Heedless of the danger of exploding ordnance and fuel, he pulled the severely wounded pilot from the searing blaze and made repeated attempts to rescue his patrol members but was driven back by the intense heat. Despite his serious burns and crushed ribs, he carried and dragged the unconscious pilot through a curtain of enemy fire to within 10 feet of a hovering rescue helicopter before collapsing. Sfc. Zabitosky's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army." 11/15/2017 - "DAMN THE TORPEDOES FOUR BELLS FULL SPEED AHEAD":  7:00 pm
Captain Percival Drayton, US Federal Navy - Deceased (aka. Captain Jack Lieberman, US Navy, Retired) will be speaking, in the “First Person,” about his exploits at sea during the War of the Rebellion, on the following date/venue: Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War - Sgt Jones Bradley Camp #149 Wednesday, November 15, 2017 West Chester Municipal Building Borough of West Chester, Pennsylvania 401 East Gay Street West Chester, PA 19380 http://www.west-chester.com/ Time: 7:00 PM... Percival and Thomas Drayton were the sons of wealthy South Carolina Congressman William Drayton. Percival joined the Navy in 1827, reaching the rank of Captain at the outbreak of the War. Thomas was an 1828 graduate of West Point, where he was classmates with Jefferson Davis, his life-long friend, who appointed Drayton a Brigadier General in the Confederate army and commander of the Port Royal, South Carolina military district. On November 7, 1861 at the Battle of Port Royal, the USS Pocahontas commanded by Percival Drayton fired on Forts Walker and Beauregard commanded by his brother Thomas. Jack will give his talk about this battle of brother against brother in Full Dress, Period Navy Ceremonial attire. Percival Drayton was promoted to Captain, US Navy in July 1862, and was assigned to Admiral David Farragut's West Gulf Squadron and commanded Farragut's flagship USS Hartford in the celebrated Naval assault and capture of Mobile Bay, Alabama in August 1864. The bay was heavily mined (tethered mines at that time were called TORPEDOES).  Farragut ordered his fleet to charge the bay. When one of the Union Monitors struck a mine and sank, the other Union ships began to retreat.  Farragut could see the ships pulling back from his high perch, where he was lashed to the rigging of his flagship.   "What's the trouble?" he shouted through his megaphone to the forward lookout.  "Torpedoes!" was shouted back.   "DAMN THE TORPEDOES" said Farragut, "FOUR BELLS - CAPTAIN DRAYTON, FULL SPEED AHEAD"   The bulk of the fleet then succeeded in entering the bay.   West Chester Municipal Building, 401 East Gay Street , West Chester, Pennsylvania

Veteran Shark Tank was created by Greater Philadelphia Veterans Network (GPVN) as a way to help veterans who are starting their own businesses. Rather than an investment, our winners take home a cash prize of $10,000.The competition will allow Veteran entrepreneurs to sharpen their business pitch, gain feedback from business leaders, and compete for a cash prize, in-kind business support services, and create a Veteran network for life as they launch their new venture. Join us for an exceptional evening! Enjoy dinner at Philadelphia's historic Union League, network with fellow veterans and entrepreneurs, watch the veterans pitch their ideas to the sharks, and prepare to be inspired For more information on how to participate or to attend the event, click here  GPVN is proud to welcome Robert Irvine as our keynote speaker. Mr. Irvine is a celebrity chef who has appeared on and hosted a variety of Food Network programs including Worst Cooks in America, Restaurant: Impossible, and A Hero’s Welcome. 12/08/2017 - Army/Navy Dining Out:  5:30 pm
The practice of DINING IN or DINING OUT (with spouses) is thought to have formally begun in 16th-century England, though some records indicate that militaries have held formal dinners as far back as the Roman Legions. The Vikings held formal ceremonies to honor and celebrate battles and heroes.  During the 18th century, the British Military incorporated the practice of formal dining into their regimental mess system. Customs and rules of the mess were soon institutionalized rules, known as the "Queen's Regulations".  The mess night or "DINING IN/OUT" became a tradition in all British regiments. The Americans, taking many of their traditions from the British military, held mess nights starting in the 18th century and the tradition continues today. The practice of DINING IN/OUT continues at the UNION LEAGUE the night before the Army/Navy and is the Armed Services Council's Premier Event. Special Guest of honor will be Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, Director, Defense Health Agency, Medical Corp. United States Army. Commissioned in June 1979, Vice Adm. Raquel Bono obtained her baccalaureate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and attended medical school at Texas Tech University. She completed a surgical internship and a General Surgery residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and a Trauma and Critical Care fellowship at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk. Vice Admiral Bono is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and has an Executive MBA from the Carson College of Business at Washington State University. Her personal decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal (three), Legion of Merit Medal (four), Meritorious Service Medal (two) and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (two). Union League members and guests are invited to attend a military DINING OUT in honor of the Army and Navy Classic to be held the following day at Lincoln Financial Field. Join military personnel, midshipmen, cadets and civilians for a grand evening to kick off the festivities. For those who have joined us before, you know what a treat this event is!
