Dear Friends,
As many of you know, our national hero, and dear friend, Medal of Honor
Recipient, Jon Cavaiani passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, after a long
battle with cancer. Jon was the embodiment of valor and courage, on the
battlefield and in life. He leaves behind his remarkable wife Barbara.
Despite the lifelong effects of multiple wounds and injuries, Jon
distinguished himself, not only as a combat soldier, ROW, Special Forces and
Delta Force NCO, but as a tireless champion for military and law enforcement
causes. Whenever the Philadelphia committee of The Marine Corps – Law
Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF) needed Jon, he was there. Sometimes
barely able to walk, or stand, for more than a short time, Jon would tough it
out for the “Philly Gang”. After his birth in Ireland and adoption, Jon grew up
in California, entered the Army from, and retired to, California. Despite all his
ties to the Golden State, Jon’s desire was to be buried from Philadelphia.
Such was his love for the folks from Philly.
The last eighteen months may have been Jon’s toughest challenge. A
challenge he took on with his characteristic strength and humor. Countless
three hundred mile round trips to Stanford Medical Center for exhausting
treatments and transfusions, the painful bone marrow transplant, and a
hundred days of isolation. Throughout it all Barb stood with Jon, all the while
caring for her failing mother. These demands and obligations prevented Barb
from working, and Jon’s retirement pay was the only source of income. As
Barbara prepares to meet new challenges, and to bring Jon to his final place of
rest, her need for funds may be greater than ever.
We are unable to lessen the burden of Jon’s loss on Barb, but we can lessen
the financial burden his illness has created. Jon’s Philly family is hosting a
special Surf and Turf dinner at the Palm Restaurant, complete with wines and
dessert. The Palm and its wine producers have answered the call, allowing us
to provide Barb with over 90% of the funds raised. We hope you’re able to
join us, and ask that you reach out to anyone you know who might be able to
attend.
Sincerely,
MC-LEF, Philadelphia Committee
