DEPTFORD TWP. — A sculpture intended to show off the township’s patriotism has sparked a debate between public officials and residents, with military veterans on both sides of the debate. Despite a warm reception upon its unveiling, the sculpture, an American flag made of paver bricks that appears to wave in the breeze as it rises off the ground, has drawn criticism from some who say it violates flag etiquette.

“It’s a beautiful sculpture,” Tony Halas, president of the South Jersey Vietnam Veterans Association, said of the monument situated in the new Veterans Memorial Park near Oak Valley School. “But to leave it on the ground where people can walk on it? I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of veterans organizations that are going to be happy about that.”

Army veteran Jim Ramer, of Oak Valley, wrote a letter to the South Jersey Times describing what he considered signs of disrespect to the flag.
