Three Medal of Honor Recipients will join fellow Vietnam Veterans as they ride up Walnut Street for “Shortest Beer Run Ever”

GATHERING OF HEROES – April 26, 2016

Join Us On Tuesday, April 26th, as the Irish Pub Welcomes These Distinguished Guests for their 7th Annual “Gathering of Heroes Event” Raising Money for Children of Marine or Federal Law Enforcement Personnel Who Were Killed in the Line of Duty

PHILADELPHIA, PA (Wednesday, April 13th, 2016) – The Irish Pub is proud to welcome three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients to Philadelphia as part of their seventh annual “Gathering of Heroes” fundraiser, which raises money for the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF). New to the event this year will be fellow Vietnam Veterans and John “Chickie” Donahue, the subject of the viral video “The World’s Greatest Beer Run” (http://tinyurl.com/GreatestBeerRunEver ) sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon. At a time when the Vietnam War was at its height, John “Chickie” Donohue, snuck back into the war zone to find his three closest friends and buy them a beer. Now, 47 years later, the group will reunite at the Irish Pub to relive the greatest beer run ever and honor the Medal of Honor Recipients and fellow Veterans. Also in attendance will be famed NY Daily News columnist, Joanna Molloy, who recently wrote a book about the beer run aptly titled, “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”. The Medal of Honor recipients, along with Chickie Donahue and his friends, will travel to Philadelphia and take on the happy hour crowd by greeting all who attend both Irish Pubs on Tuesday, April 26th, 2016.

The distinguished gentlemen will start off from 4pm to 5:30pm at the Irish Pub on 1123 Walnut Street, then ride up Walnut Street in military Humvees and a full police escort, along with fellow veterans to the Irish Pub on 2007 Walnut Street, where they will be greeted with top honors from 5:30pm – 9pm. All tips, t-shirt and charity auction item proceeds will go directly to the non-profit organization, which provides scholarships for the children of Marine and law enforcement personnel who were killed in the line of duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country.

Top law enforcement officers, local celebrities and some very special VIPs will pour drinks and swap stories alongside the legendary soldiers. MOH recipients expected to attend are Barney Barnum, Mike Thornton and Brian Thacker. “The Medal of Honor is ‘the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force, which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States,’” says MC-LEF board member Michael Wallace, “and we are fortunate enough to have these distinguished gentlemen join us at the Irish Pub to sign books, greet guests and help raise money for fellow veterans and their families.”

“The Irish Pub is thrilled to once again host such a meaningful event right here in Philadelphia. This annual event is very special to us. The warmth and patriotic comradery in the room on this night is electric and we are elated that Chickie and his friends decided to join us in support of this event. And of course, we can’t wait to see our old friends Medal of Honor Recipients Barney Barnum, Mike Thornton, and Brian Thacker. The goal is to raise $60,000 for MC-LEF on the 26th and we are anticipating a very successful night.” says Mark O’Connor, co-owner of the Irish Pub and Founding Member of the Irish Pub Children’s Foundation.”

The $20 event donation fee includes a free can of Pabst Blue Ribbon to toast the military veterans and the MOH recipients and there will be a live auction which includes a Phillies suite, as well as some very special military items signed by the Medal of Honor Recipients. Additionally, autographed Medal of Honor books and citations will be available for purchase, as well as a silent auction. All proceeds will go directly to MC-LEF.

Since the start of MC-LEF’s partnership with the Irish Pub, the non-profit which donates 98% of the funds raised directly to the children, has raised a total of $270,000. Last year, MC-LEF awarded $300,000 in educational grants to the ten children of the Marines who were killed in March 2015 when their helicopter crashed during a routine training mission at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida panhandle. Additionally, two educational bonds totaling $60,000 were given to the children of Marine and Pennsylvania State Trooper Bryon Dickson, killed in 2014..

From the YouTube hit the “Greatest Beer Run Ever”…to the shortest beer run
