9/11 Memorial in Harbor View Park

Bayonne Harbor, NJ

The September 11 Bayonne Remembers Committee will hold its annual Interfaith Memorial Service and Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the 9/11 Memorial in Harbor View Park, located at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, starting at 7 p.m.

The event, taking place rain or shine, will honor the victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and United Airlines Flight 93. The service will also honor the victims of the attack on the World Trade Center on Feb. 26, 1993, including William Macko of Bayonne.

The program, coordinated by the Rev. Joseph Barbone, pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, will include a bagpiper, color guards from the Bayonne Police and Fire Departments and the Bayonne High School Marching Band. Taps will be played at the end of the program.

Several members of the Bayonne Interfaith Clergy will offer prayers, readings and reflections; there will be music and patriotic songs as well. Mayor Mark A. Smith will also present brief remarks.

Shuttle buses, which will bring attendees to the program, can be boarded at Catholic War Veterans Post No. 1612, located at West 23rd Street and Del Monte Drive, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Once the program concludes, the shuttle buses will bring passengers back to 23rd Street.

Attendees who wish to drive directly to the ceremony can park in designated spaces at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor. There are also some parking spaces located next to Harbor View Park.

The memorial, “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism,” was designed by world-renowned artist-sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, a resident of Russia and a native of the Republic of Georgia, and was donated as a gift from the Russian Federation to the United States of America. Often referred to as Bayonne’s “Teardrop” memorial, it bears the names of all of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The members of the September 11 Bayonne Remembers Committee, which was started in 2001, however, felt they also wanted something special to memorialize the residents of Bayonne who perished in the terrorist attacks. So, in 2007, the committee dedicated separate monuments for Bayonne’s victims: one who died in the World Trade Center in 1993, two who died on United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania in 2001 and 10 who died in the World Trade Center in 2001.

In 2011, the committee also dedicated the Twin Towers Steel Monument, a 4-foot long steel beam from the towers.
