The practice of DINING IN or DINING OUT (with spouses) is thought to have formally begun in 16th-century England, though some records indicate that militaries have held formal dinners as far back as the Roman Legions. The Vikings held formal ceremonies to honor and celebrate battles and heroes.  During the 18th century, the British Military incorporated the practice of formal dining into their regimental mess system. Customs and rules of the mess were soon institutionalized rules, known as the “Queen’s Regulations“.  The mess night or “DINING IN/OUT” became a tradition in all British regiments. The Americans, taking many of their traditions from the British military, held mess nights starting in the 18th century and the tradition continues today.

The practice of DINING IN/OUT continues at the UNION LEAGUE the night before the Army/Navy and is the Armed Services Council’s Premier Event. Special Guest of honor will be Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, Director, Defense Health Agency, Medical Corp. United States Army. Commissioned in June 1979, Vice Adm. Raquel Bono obtained her baccalaureate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and attended medical school at Texas Tech University. She completed a surgical internship and a General Surgery residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and a Trauma and Critical Care fellowship at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk.

Vice Admiral Bono is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and has an Executive MBA from the Carson College of Business at Washington State University. Her personal decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal (three), Legion of Merit Medal (four), Meritorious Service Medal (two) and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (two).

Union League members and guests are invited to attend a military DINING OUT in honor of the Army and Navy Classic to be held the following day at Lincoln Financial Field. Join military personnel, midshipmen, cadets and civilians for a grand evening to kick off the festivities. For those who have joined us before, you know what a treat this event is! For those who have not, start the tradition!
