Post 405 Meeting April 16, 2018 – 6pm

Topic:

‘A Philadelphia born Civil War Veteran; world renowned Biblical Scholar; Leipzig University Professor; and Imperial German Army soldier, who as oldest known WWI veteran, was killed in action at age 71 years in 1917’

The world famous Philadelphian Professor, Caspar Renee Gregory, of the Theological faculty at the University of Leipzig was a native of Philadelphia, graduate of University of Pennsylvania, a Civil War veteran with the ‘Gray Reserves’ (Monument in front of the Union League); received his doctorate in Leipzig, became a world famous specialist on New Testament scholarship, became a German citizen; and at the outbreak of WWI, enlisted in the German Imperial Army at the age of 69, becoming, as far as known, the oldest soldier in WWI. He was promoted to Lieutenant and was killed in action near Rheims, France in April, 1917 at the age of 71 (before the US entered the war), being the oldest known veteran of WWI to have died in combat. While a soldier of the Gray Reserves, he often visited the Union League. There is a memorial to Gregory near his former home in Leipzig. His entire family is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Presented by Dr. Andy Waskie, a Union League Member and member of American Legion, Post #405 and a ‘guest’ professor in Leipzig.
