Dear Friend
I am writing this letter on behalf of 33 yr. old Mike Wunsch who has Eye Cancer. I am holding a fundraiser “Help Mike Fight for Life & Sight” on Sunday, June 5th. from 1pm ~ 5pm (rain or shine) at the Salem County Fairgrounds Rt.40 Woodstown, NJ. This will prove to be a fun and lively family event. (See reverse side for show information) We are asking for financial help through our sponsorships.
Sponsors will be included on our Fundraiser Show Playbill and announced throughout our show.
Mike needs your help by sponsoring this event! All proceeds will go to WillsEye Hospital & Medical Associates for continuing treatments.
Ocular melanoma (“OM” for short) is a cancer of the eye diagnosed in approximately 2,000-2,500 adults annually in the United States. It occurs most often in lightly pigmented individuals with a median age of 55 years. However, it can occur in all races and at any age. Mike, however is 33 with brown eyes.
Ocular melanoma is a malignant tumor that can grow and spread to other parts of the body.
OM is much rarer than skin melanoma and behaves quite differently. There are other types of eye cancers, but OM is the most common in adults and the most dangerous. It’s a potentially lethal disease, especially when it spreads to the liver.
Mike was treated at Wills Eye Hospital back in May 2015 with plaque radiotherapy. Plaque radiotherapy is currently the most common form of treatment for ocular melanoma. This technique involves a small radiation plaque that is the size of a nickel that is surgically applied to the eye directly over the tumor. The plaque contains radioactive seeds carefully placed by specially trained radiation oncologists and physicists. It is left in place for 4 to 7 days to provide the radiation to the entire tumor. The goal of this treatment is to destroy the tumor and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the body. Mike will have to undergo treatment to reduce deterioration of his eye due to the radiation. He receives needles containing and medicine directly in the eye every four months for two years to help prevent the deterioration. As of February 2016 A rip was discovered and it is leaking fluid into the eye causing more vision loss that needs to be fixed with laser surgery that insurance does not want to cover.
We are asking that you please donate to help Mike and his family cover the cost of the procedure to help save his eye and his vision.
You can do so as a Sponsor.
Please know that no donation is too small. Every contribution helps and is greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible.
