Daniel Sweeney graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School in 2005. After deciding that he did not want to attend college at that time, he applied for the Philadelphia Fire Department and began the Fire Academy in July 2006. In February, 2007, he was assigned to Ladder 10 at Kensington and Castor Avenues.
Early on Easter Monday morning, April 9, 2012, Ladder 10 was dispatched to a 5-alarm warehouse fire. After the fire was declared under control, Daniel and his company were checking the interior of a furniture store. While they were in the store, the warehouse wall collapsed, killing Daniel and his lieutenant.
The Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Fund was established when kind-hearted citizens sent the family money. The purpose of the fund is to assist families whose children are attending an Archdiocesan high school.
The Firefighter Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship is open to all students, without regard to race, sex, national origin or religious beliefs. Our only intent is to help families with the education of their children. A selection committee has been established and all scholarships will be awarded based on the financial need and merit of the applicants.
