He joined the Army in 1998 and served 10 combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was previously assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment.The 38-year-old lived off post in Fayetteville, and civilian law enforcement is investigating the incident.  “Sgt. 1st Class Grant Shanaman was an American Paratrooper, a combat veteran, and a selfless servant to our nation,” said Col. Pat Work, commander of the 2nd BCT, in the release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”   During his 18 years in the Army, Shanaman served 10 combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He also served more than 11 years with the 75th Ranger Regiment and was most recently a brigade operations non-commissioned officer, according to the release. SFC Shanaman is a patriot who served our country with honor and now it’s our turn to honor him.

A paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division died in his home in North Carolina on Wednesday.
Sgt. 1st Class Grant Shanaman, of Pennsylvania, was an infantryman assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, according to an Army press release.

The 38-year-old lived off post in Fayetteville, and civilian law enforcement is investigating the incident.

His awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with silver oak leaf cluster, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Afghan Campaign Medal with campaign star and Iraq Campaign Medal with three campaign stars.
