Paddle on the Wild and Scenic Delaware River – a fully-funded veterans course in April – Even transportation is covered veteran is out of state. But, time is running out. Please call today to sign up and details. Call  866-467-7651 or email nstadnycki@outwardboundphiladelphia.org .

Trip dates are April 5th to the 10th

This course is designed for Veterans of OEF/OIF that are looking to revisit their leadership skills, are interested in challenging themselves, and are open to discovering the lifelong benefits and perspective that only wilderness travel with Outward Bound can offer.  The freedom, beauty and challenges of Outward Bound are perfect for veterans to help them reconnect at home and in a new work setting.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our six-day Veterans course is expedition-style, featuring a 100 mile paddle down the Delaware River. “Expedition-style” means that you will leave the Philadelphia School on the first day of your course and not return to it until the last day of the course.  You will travel with all the food and equipment you need to conduct your expedition in your canoe: stoves, tents, food, etc.  Your group might occasionally sleep at the same campsite twice, but generally you will be moving to a new campsite every night as you move along your river expedition route.  This means no showers (perhaps some swimming), no cell phones, no television, nor any other modern luxuries to which you may be accustomed. You should come to your course prepared for, and excited about, devoting all of your time and energy to your expedition, your crew, and your Outward Bound experience.

You and the other members of your crew will learn to cook tasty and nutritious meals over portable stoves.  Our meals are primarily vegetarian (not solely) and consist of grains, nuts, pasta, beans, cereals, and other light dry foods.  The food may seem unfamiliar at first—we don’t pack many processed foods or “junk food”—but you will find that it tastes good and gives you energy you need for a long day.  A typical breakfast might be granola or oatmeal; lunch would include tortillas and cheese or peanut butter and jam on biscuits that you bake the previous evening; dinner might be macaroni and cheese or beans and rice.  We can accommodate some special food needs (such as lactose or wheat intolerance or vegan eaters), but only if we know well in advance.  If you have a particularly unusual diet, we may ask you to bring some of your own specialty foods.

As this is not a guided trip, all group members will pitch in to do camp chores, including cooking, washing pots, setting up tents, and hanging food bags (to keep them safe from critters).  You’ll find that as the expedition progresses, your mastery of these camp craft skills will enable you to operate more efficiently and effectively around camp.

COURSE AREA

Pennsylvania’s endless mountains, wild scenic rivers, and expansive forests.

Pennsylvania has over 17 million acres of forest and thousands of miles of trails, rivers, and lakes for our crew to explore.  Hemlocks – centuries old, a chain of ponds left over from the ice hillocks that rose when glaciers formed the land, canyons with waterfalls tumbling down rocky slopes, droves of red pine, and stands of white pine…Nesting bald eagles and bogs with plants that catch and eat insects, islands that echo with the squawks of nesting egrets and a gap that was carved through a mountain by the patience of a river…A pure stand of birch, a floor of fern and wildflowers, and panoramic vista views of the endless Blue Mountains…
