Our guest speaker, Craig Caba will reveal, through original evidence, testimony, and artifacts, the influence of Gettysburg with regards to the anti-slavery movement and its panoramic place in American History. Having access to the original documents saved by the prominent Gettysburg family of Professor J. Howard Wert, Mr. Caba will document Adams County’s tremendous hatred for slavery since 1836 and its unique social and political role, spanning three decades.

A veteran and special guide in the Battle of Gettysburg, J. Howard Wert played a unique role by guiding troops. Before the war his experience on the Underground Railroad familiarized him with local terrain. Wert’s post-war writings explored the Anti-slavery Movement, the great Battle, aspects of the Emancipation, the Gettysburg Address, and the 13 Amendment.

Speaker’s Background – Craig Caba is a 1959 charter member and past president of the Harrisburg Civil War Round Table and the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association (GBPA).

For 30 years Mr. Caba has presented lectures to numerous Civil War Round Tables and has spoken at many historical societies, museum seminars, and conferences at Temple Univ., Princeton, Dickinson, and Gettysburg College.

He is the author of numerous books, including Historic Southern Saddles, U.S. Military Drums, The Patriot Daughters at Gettysburg, Lost Children of the Battlefield – A Collection of Photographs Found at Gettysburg, A Recently Discovered Gettysburg Address, and Episodes of Gettysburg and the Underground Railroad.

Mr. Caba served as a Civil War consultant over the years for Time-Life’s Gettysburg, the History Channel, Maryland Adelphia Cable, A & E Network, and PBS.

In 2003, he received the Eisenhower Preservation Award from the GBPA for his life-time efforts with the Daniel Lady Farm, and the PA House of Representatives’ Citation for Gettysburg Monuments Preservation. Mr. Caba is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a retired history educator.
