HUME, MARVIN IRWIN, age 94, of Erma passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Cape Regional Medical Center. Marvin was born February 3, 1921 in Collingswood, NJ; formerly lived in Ventnor, NJ; and has been a Cape May area resident since 1986. He is the son of the late Donald and the late Maude (Irvin) Hume. Marvin was a 1938 graduate of Collingswood High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania until entering the Navy during World War II. He worked as a tool and die maker at McDonald Aircraft in St Louis, MO. For 25 years, Marvin owned and operated the Boardwalk Rock & Shell Shop in Atlantic City, NJ. In 1973 he moved his operation to Sunset Beach where he loved working at the family business (gift shops). Marvin was a member of the DAV Chapter 44 of Del Haven, the Chapter 184 of the American Legion of Wildwood, the Peterson Little Post 386 of the VFW in Cape May. He is best remembered as the man who honors our nation’s veterans by raising and lowering their casket flags at his nightly ceremonies at his Sunset Beach property. There is a long waiting list of families wishing to honor their heroes at Marvin’s Flag Pole and each ceremony is attended by hundreds of people as they pay their respects to the fallen. Marvin is survived by his Life Companion of 30 years Patricia Wolfe; his sons: Larry (Michele) Hume & Brian Hume; and his daughters: Kathy Hume & Sharon (Chick) Bloom. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Ronald Hume and his two sisters Carol & Gerry. There will be a funeral service at 12 noon on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave, Cape May, NJ 08204. Friends and family will be received from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Evoy Funeral Home, 3218 Bayshore Rd, North Cape May, NJ, 08204 and then from 10:00 AM to 12 noon on Thursday at the Cape May Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Cold Spring Cemetery, 780 Seashore Rd, Cold Spring, NJ 08204. The family suggests donation in Marvin’s memory to: The Run for the Fallen, PO Box 474, Wrightstown, NJ 08562-0474 or The Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
