The WDPD K-9 Unit was established in the early 80’s when the department acquired a German Shepherd patrol dog named Mountain. In 1997, the K-9 Unit was brought back when the department acquired a Labrador Retriever named Kilo. In 2007, the WDPD again re-instituted the K-9 Unit and purchased a German Shepherd named Judge. Judge was handled by Corporal Mike Franks. Judge was trained in patrol and narcotics detection. Judge served the residents of West Deptford and the surrounding communities from 2007 until his retirement in 2013. Following Judge, the K-9 Unit again expanded. The Unit purchased a German Shepherd named Mako. Mako is currently handled by K-9 Officer Joe LaMalfa. In 2013, Corporal Mike Franks and the WDPD purchased a Belgian Malinois named Tazor to fill the vacancy left by Judge. Tazor is trained in patrol and narcotics detection and is currently handled by Corporal Mike Franks. In 2015, the K-9 Unit began the selection process for a new handler. Patrolman Fred Vergara was partnered with a Belgian Malinois named Reaper who will be trained in patrol and narcotics detection. The K-9 Unit operates solely on donations and fundraiser’s held by K-9 Unit members.

Judge’s Jog is named in honor of K-9 Judge whom fought a courageous battle against Cushing’s Disease. Upon the realization of Judge’s deteriorating health, Corporal Franks made the heart wrenching decision to put Judge down. More info go to https://www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=51175
