Saturday, May 28th – Philly POPS “Memorial Salute” Concert

The Philly POPS and the Mann Center for the Performing Arts will present a new concert during Memorial Day weekend titled “Memorial Salute.” Two-thousand complimentary tickets will be given to veterans, active military, Philadelphia police and firefighters and other first responders. Tickets begin at $15 per person, and each purchase helps offset the cost of hosting the veterans, military and first responders at Salute Series events throughout 2016.

Monday, May 30th – Memorial Day at Independence Seaport Museum

Independence Seaport Museum and The Chapel of Four Chaplains will host a Memorial Day celebration aboard the Spanish-American War cruiser Olympia.The event will honor the men and women of the military, both past and present, with the 2016 theme “Remembering the Unknown Soldier.” The event will feature a pop-up display of pictures and video and the firing of Olympia’s signal guns, among other activities. Space is limited for the event, however, so reserving a spot is recommended.Light refreshments will be provided afterward, and all guests who attend the ceremony will receive complimentary access to the Independence Seaport Museum for the remainder of the day. The museum will also offer free admission for all veterans and active military, along with discounted admission for their relatives, on Memorial Day. 2-3 p.m. | Free, 211 S. Monday, May 30th  – Memorial Day Ceremony – Philadelphia Vietnam Wall – 2 Soldiers Added

The names of two career noncommissioned officers, who became ill in Vietnam and later died in military hospitals, will be unveiled in a special ceremony at the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial (PVVM) on Monday, May 30 at 12:30 p.m. More info, click here

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA

Aldan-Members of American Legion Post 1000 will conduct a memorial service Monday, May 31 at 10:45 at the Aldan War Memorial, Providence Road and Woodlawn Avenue. The Darby VFW Post Motorcycle Color Guard will participate and the Rev. Paul Thompson, pastor of Aldan Union Church, will offer prayer. Lunch will follow at the post home on Bonsall Avenue.

Aston Green Ridge American Legion Post 926 Memorial Day Parade will take place at 10 a.m. Monday. The parade will form at the Village Green Shopping Center, turn south on Concord Road and end at the post, where a memorial service will be held. The Sons of the American Legion will pass out gifts to children along the parade route. VFW Bonaventure-Clark Post 6613 and Killen-Miles Post 87 American Legion will hold a Memorial Day parade Monday at 11 a.m. The parade will start at Ahearn’s on Mount Road and proceed to the monuments at New and Mount roads.James Murphy, past commander of the 7th District VFW, will be master of ceremonies, an Our Lady of Charity School student will read an essay on “What Service To Our Country Mean To Me,” and a combined color guard and firing squad of Posts 6613 and 87 will salute the dead.

Brookhaven –The borough will celebrate Memorial Day Monday with events beginning at 8 a.m.The invocation and benediction will be conducted by Pastor Lawrence Weed of Full Gospel Assembly Church, a rifle salute will be commenced by the Sun Valley Junior Marine Corps ROTC, and the Boys Scouts will sing “The Star-Bangled Banner.”Old American flags will be officially retired, and light refreshments will be served following the service.

Chester The Chester Veterans Council will observe Memorial Day Monday with services beginning at 7:45 a.m.A motorcade will head to various sites during the day with services conducted by VFW Post 1521, VFW Post 3425, American Legion Post 190, American Legion Post 300, the Chester Veterans Council, the Sun Hill Civic Association and the Chester Veterans Council for Deceased Police Officers.The motorcade will make its final stop at Chester Rural Cemetery for a Soldiers Circle at 1 p.m., and services led by the Chester Veterans Council.Szymanski-Rywacki American Post 546 members will celebrate its 76th annual Memorial Day Mass Sunday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Hedwig’s Church, Fourth and Hayes streets. Legionnaires and auxiliary members will meet in the church parking lot at 9 a.m.After Mass, a bus will take those wishing to attend graveside services, tributes and wreath layings at the veterans monuments at IHM Cemetery in Linwood. Upon returning, there will be a free luncheon in the church’s social room.

Chester Heights A memorial service will be held Monday at Chester Heights Community Park on Valleybrook Road at 9 a.m. The service will feature the laying of a wreath and a salute by veterans.

Clifton Heights Robert Holt American Legion Post 358, Italian-American War Veterans Post 16 and DiGiacomo-DeFlager Moyes VFW Post 6317 will host a Memorial Day ceremony in the borough.The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the World War II monument at Diamond Street and Baltimore Avenue. The Red Barron Band will perform and well as playing taps. The honor guard and firing squad will also participate.

Crum Lynne American Legion Post 777 invites all Crum Lynne residents to attend the annual Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the post, 137 Walter St.Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided after the parade, and kids will compete in a bike-decoration contest, with the winner receiving an award.

Darby Borough Willie G. Childs Post 974, located at 1115 Summit St., will host an open house Monday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.The ladies auxiliary will serve hot dogs and soda to children, and dinners, consisting of chicken, string beans, potato salad or macaroni and cheese and a roll, can be purchased for $7. Cpl. William C. Greifzu Post 598 will celebrate its 90th anniversary with a Memorial Day parade. The day will kick off with a 21-gun salute at 9 a.m. at the Colwyn War Memorial, Fourth Street and Colwyn Avenue. A firing squad composed of Chapter E of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club and all members of the Greifzu post will then proceed to the grounds of Sharon Bank on Chester Pike to perform a 21-gun salute. Traditional ceremonies will follow at 10 a.m. at Collingdale Borough Hall, Clifton Avenue and MacDade Boulevard. After the full-service memorial, members will proceed to the Aldan War Memorial for a ceremony scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.At noon, the final ceremony will take place at Mt. Zion Cemetery, where Civil War veterans will be honored.

East Lansdowne Harold Carmichael American Legion Post 578 will remember the war dead on Memorial Day. The post will continue its annual tradition of decorating graves and war memorials with flags and wreaths.Services begin at the conclusion of the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church, 153 Penn Blvd., at the gravesites of two former pastors, the Rev. John Fallon, a former World War II chaplain, and the Rev. Edmond O’Shea, who are buried on church grounds.Post members, accompanied by members of the East Lansdowne police and fire departments, will place flags on graves of veterans buried in Fernwood Cemetery. Wreaths will be placed and solemn observances will be held at the borough’s Triangle Veterans Memorial, Long Lane and Lewis Avenue, and at the veterans memorial at the borough hall, 155 Lexington Ave., followed by refreshments for marchers and children inside the hall.

Folsom  Schoolhouse Center will host a Memorial Day service Friday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m.Herbert W. Best VFW Post 928 in Folsom will be conducting the ceremony for all veterans. If you wish to stay for lunch, please call in your reservation. Lunch cost is only $3 per person. Call 610-237-8100.

Glenolden Murray-Stuart American Legion Post 566 will conduct gravesite ceremonies Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The post will host everlasting services at 8 p.m. at the post, 35 S. Glen and Boon avenues.On Monday, the post will sponsor the annual Memorial Day parade, which begins at 11:45 a.m. in front of the post and ends at Park Square, followed by refreshments at the post.

Lansdowne Lace up those sneakers and join us for the annual Lansdowne Memorial Day 5K Run/Walk and make some money for the Lansdowne Boys and Girls Club (LBGC). Marple Newtown The township’s combined veterans alliance will host a Memorial Day parade starting at 10 a.m. at Malin Road and West Chester Pike and proceeding to Glenwood Cemetery for memorial services.American Legion Post 805, located at 2340 West Chester Pike, will host a memorial service at 11 a.m., followed by ice cream for everyone. VFW Post 7390 will host a ceremony at noon at Veterans Park on Lawrence Road in Broomall, with a walk of honor to celebrate a brick dedication for deceased veterans. Refreshments and gifts will be available following the ceremony.

Media The borough will observe Memorial Day with a State Street parade and short ceremony in front of the county courthouse. The event is organized by the Veterans Legacy Project, Chairman Bob McMahon and Executive Director Bob Dimond. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday, and will take the traditional route starting at the Media Elementary School field, west on State Street, north on Orange and onto Front Street and pass the reviewing stand at the county courthouse, Front Street and Veterans Square.The courthouse ceremony will feature Kane Kalas, youngest son of the late Harry Kalas, who was the emcee for countless parades in Media and a tireless supporter of fellow veterans. Kane Kalas will sing several patriotic songs as an honor to his father and the occasion.Linwood’s Ed Dougherty, a Champions Tour pro and a Vietnam veteran, will also be on hand.

Morton Harold Paul Saks AMVETS Post 118, located at 211 N. Morton Ave., will hold a Memorial Day service Monday at 10 a.m. Army Lt. Col. John Doran, an Airborne Ranger who served in the Persian Gulf and Iraq, will be guest speaker. At the service, the AMVETS will also honor local students who participated in the AMVETS National Americanism Program, which consisted of students drawing American flags, making posters and writing essays on “Why We Celebrate the 4th of July.”

Ridley Park  A Memorial Day observance will be held Monday at Veterans Park, Ridley and Sellers avenues, beginning at 10 a.m. The Vietnam Memorial plaque will be rededicated and World War II veteran Edward Capriotti will be guest speaker. Several legislators are scheduled to attend. Refreshments will be served at borough hall following the service.

Ridley Township Herbert W. Best VFW Post 928 and its ladies auxiliary will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday beginning at 11 a.m. Post members will perform a service at the World War II Memorial located at the Folsom Fire Station. Members will return to the post grounds to conduct Memorial Day services.Three-hundred-sixty-two white, wooden crosses have been placed in the ground, and each cross will bear the name of a deceased post member. Upon the toll of a bell, each cross will be decorated with a Buddy Poppy. Taps will be sounded, followed by a three-round volley performed by the post firing squad.The public is invited to attend the ceremony, and refreshments will be served.

Thornbury The township will hold a flag ceremony and memorial wreath presentation at the World War II Monument in Thornbury Park Monday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. State Rep. Nick Miccarelli, R-162, of Ridley Park, will be on hand.

Tinicum Fox-Smith VFW and its ladies auxiliary will sponsor a Memorial Day parade Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m., at Fourth Street and Massasoit Avenue in Lester at the old fire house. The route will wind through the township and finish on Carre Avenue in front of the post, where the public is invited back for refreshments following the parade.In the event of rain, a memorial service will be held at the township municipal building, 629 N. Gov. Printz Blvd., Essington.

Upland The borough’s annual Memorial Day parade will be held Monday beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will start on Main Street at Upland Baptist Church and take a circuitous route to the war memorial at Bristol Lord Field at Sixth and Church streets. The ceremony at the memorial starts at 9:30 a.m., and will include the laying of wreaths and a 21-gun salute.The annual community picnic will start at 11 a.m. at the same location. Children’s games and free food and drink will be available until 1 p.m.

Upper Darby The Upper Darby Marine Corps League Detachment 884 will get an early start on Memorial Day to honor the war dead at four cemeteries. Members will depart from the post on Providence Road for memorial services beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the grave of Cpl. John Mackie, a Civil War veteran buried at Arlington and the first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor. Members will visit graves of recently deceased Marine Corps League veterans.Members of the 884 will be joined by American Legion Post 214 members and auxiliary for joint gravesite memorials at Montrose Cemetery in Upper Darby. The motorcade of officers will also travel to Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon and SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Marple to honor former military personnel. All Afghanistan War and Iraq War veterans are invited to join in the processions to gravesites and the final ceremony for all deceased 884 members at noon Monday at the post, 1026 Providence Road, Secane. The ceremony is open to the public and a picnic at the post will follow.

Upper Providence The Media VFW Post 3460 will host a ceremony Sunday, at 10 a.m. at the Upper Providence War Memorial, 935 N. Providence Road.

LEHIGH COUNTY, PA

The Lehigh Valley region begin Saturday with the kickoff of a three-day event at SteelStacksin Bethlehem.

The sixth-annual Memorial Day Celebration transforms the South Bethlehem entertainment campus into a memorial honoring local heroes, with more than 800 images of veterans and active military personnel displayed as part of the “Our Hometown Heroes” display.

The weekend’s activities will also include a new program featuring veterans who worked at Bethlehem Steel in the 1940s and then went off to fight in World War II, as well as a special service on Monday honoring the hundreds of servicemen and women featured on the Our Hometown Heroes banners over the past five years.

PALMER TOWNSHIP | Brown and Lynch Post 9 American Legion will hold a Memorial Day Service at Northampton Memorial Shrine, 3051 Green Pond Road, beginning at 8:45 a.m. Retired Army Lt. Col. John Thomas will speak, along with remarks by Ann Marie Panella. Other scheduled events include the reading of the Gettysburg Address, a rifle volley, wreath placement, a vocalist, the playing of taps and a Palmer Township police honor guard.

BLAIRSTOWN | The Givens-Belet Post 258 American Legion sponsors the Blairstown Memorial Day Parade. This year the legion will be dedicating the parade in honor of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor 1941-2016. A veterans memorial service will start at noon in Cedar Ridge Cemetery on Route 94 with the parade following immediately thereafter (about 1 p.m.), finishing at Footbridge Park, where trophies will be awarded and complimentary refreshments served.

BUSHKILL TOWNSHIP | The 4th annual Veterans Remembrance and Flag Retirement ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Flagpole at the recreation fields directly across from the township municipal building at 1114 Bushkill Center Road. (The rain location is inside Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Co. social hall, behind the municipal building.) Featured speakers are Kit and John Cotton of Bethlehem Township, who met in Vietnam in 1969 when Kit served as a Red Cross “Donut Dolly” and John was an Air Force fighter pilot. Their presentation is called “A Touch of Home in a Combat Zone.” The Nazareth Community Band will open the ceremony. Emcee is state Rep. Marcia Hahn. The program concludes with the rifle squad detail of the U.S. Army Reserve 744th Military Police Battalion and taps played by Randy Baxendale.

HELLERTOWN | The Edward H. Ackerman American Legion Post 397 will host a Memorial Day service at Union Cemetery of Hellertown, 89 Main St. Participants will begin to assemble at 1:30 p.m.; the service begins at 2 p.m., with the Legion Riders assembling at the cemetery band shell at 1:45 p.m.

EASTON | The Rice-Ebner American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 588 and the South Side Memorial Day Service begins at 1 p.m. in McKeen Park, adjacent to the fire station at Berwick and Reynolds streets. The guest speaker is Lou Ferrone, often referred to as “Mr. Easton” because of his vast knowledge of the city and its history. Remarks will also be offered by Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr.; David Daiello, commander of Post 588; and Melody Rogers, president of the Civic Association. In the event of rain, the program will be canceled.

LOPATCONG TOWNSHIP | A Memorial Day and Veterans Rally Point dedication ceremony will be held 1 p.m. at Lopatcong Municipal Park, rain or shine. Bring chairs, blankets etc. and witness the dedication of the Veterans Rally Point, which is a tribute to all servicemen and women missing or killed in action, as well as to Terry Lee, longtime Warren County clerk who died in 2015. Lee, a Harmony Township resident, was active in military affairs, planning and frequently appearing at local memorials and services. The ceremony begins with a presentation of the colors and service branch flags. There will be a “two-bell” ceremony honoring all veterans who are presently serving, a firing detail from Post 9 American Legion, a landing of a Blackhawk helicopter (at 2 p.m.), a demonstration from Canine Companions and music by Inch and the Echoes from 3 to 6 p.m.

RIEGELSVILLE, Pa. | A Memorial Day Parade will form from the Riegelsville Fire House at 12:30 p.m. and move via Edgewood, Fern, Durham, Delaware and Easton roads, then west on Elmwood Lane to the cemetery. At the Delaware River Bridge, there will band selections by Palisades High School along with prayer and the launching of a memorial wreath. The parade then moves to the World War I monument for the placing of another wreath, volley firing and taps. More ceremonies are held at the Riegelsville cemetery with music, wreath-laying, a volley firing, echo firing and taps. Daniel Fraley of the Bucks County Department of Veterans Affairs will give the Memorial Day address. Scholarships will be presented. The event concludes with refreshments at Rieglesville Post 950 of the Ameican Legion, 238 Ash Lane. If rain, services will be held at 1 p.m. at the Riegelsville Fire House, 333 Delaware Road.

WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP | A Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. to honor fallen heroes, living veterans and service persons on active duty at the Williams Township Municipal Building, 655 Cider Press Road. David Heintzelman, of Hellertown, will deliver the address. Arthur Verba, a senior township veteran, will lay a wreath at the base of the memorial to the township’s fallen heroes, whose names will be read by Dale Murray. A Community Recognition Award will be given to Adam Koerber and his children, Jesse and Melissa, in appreciation for the contributions they make in assisting the school children with their salutes to veterans and in site preparations for the program each year. Also participating are the Wilson Area High School Band, Boy Scout Troop 31, Girl Scout Junior Troop 889, Brownie Troop 8022 of Williams Township, Pastor Blake Heffner of St. John’s Church of Morgan Hill, and members of Marine Corps League/Northampton County Detachment.

ALLENTOWN | The 2016 Allentown Lions Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. A memorial service will follow the parade on the Allentown Grammar School grounds. The parade route is three quarters of a mile long, beginning on North Main Street (Rt. 524) at the Allen Drive exit from the staging area, heading south on Main Street through town and turning left on High Street (Rt. 539) to the Elementary School. Immediately after the last group finishes, a Memorial Day Service will be held near the front of the elementary school.  Prior to the start of the parade there will be a bicycle decorating contest sponsored by the Allentown Business Community Association at 16 Allen Drive. All participants are welcome to ride their bicycles in the parade. If rain threatens, the Memorial Service may be postponed.

BANGOR | The Bangor VFW, American Legion and Elks will be hosting a Memorial Day ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Cemetery (on Sixth Street) and Founders Park (South Main Street). Speakers are state Rep. Joe Emrick and Dwayne Miller, former Bangor mayor. Slate Belt area graduates who will be entering the military also will be honored. If rain, the ceremony will be held at the Bangor VFW.

GLEN GARDNER | The Spruce Run Memorial VFW Post 5119 at 179 Main St. will hold its annual service at 10 a.m. During this event, the VFW will award three scholarships to students. Three Patriotic Art Contest finalists also will be recognized. Light refreshments will follow.

HACKETTSTOWN | The Hackettstown American Legion will host the Hackettstown Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m.; it will conclude with the Memorial Day Service at Union Cemetery.

NAZARETH | The Nazareth Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. from the circle in Nazareth and proceeds down Main Street, before stopping at the American Legion at 158 S. Main St. for a wreath-laying and 21-gun salute. It then goes down Prospect Street to Broad Street to Center Street, around the circle and back down Main Street to Belvidere to Mauch Chunk to the VFW at 144 Mauch Chunk for a wreath laying. The parade ends at Nazareth Borough Hall, 134 S. Main St., with a ceremony featuring guest speaker Staff Sgt. Matt Mungatin. Nazareth Area High School student Julia McFarland will recite the Gettysburg Address; the Nazareth High School Blue Eagle Marching Band will play patriotic music. Refreshments follow at the VFW.

PHILLIPSBURG | The parade will kick off from Abbott Street onto South Main Street at 9 a.m. As soon as the parade reaches Shappell Park the ceremony will begin. Roger DiVittorio is the chairman of the parade committee and master of ceremonies. The main address will be delivered by Thomas J. Fey, Warren County Legion commander, along with several readings and a selection by the Phillipsburg High School Band. After the ceremony at Shappell Park, the parade will continue down South Main Street to the free bridge, where the Bernardine May American Legion Post 457 firing squad will join members of the Brown and Lynch American Legion Post and Marine Corps for the short ceremony in the center of the bridge. Mayors from Easton and Phillipsburg will toss a wreath into the Delaware River and Phillipsburg High School and Easton Area High School bands will play the national anthem.

ROSETO | The Martocci-Capobianco American Legion Post 750, led by the Bangor Area High School Band, will leave the post home on Garibaldi Avenue at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to the New Catholic Cemetery where services will be held at 9 a.m. The contingent will then move to the Roseto Presbyterian Cemetery on Liberty Street for services at 9:30 a.m. The final graveside services will be held at the Catholic cemetery adjacent to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church at 10 a.m. From the cemetery the Legionnaires will proceed to the Municipal Plaza on Garibaldi Avenue for the Community Services at the War Monuments beginning at 10:45 a.m. These services will also include the clergy from the area churches. Northampton County Senior Judge Leonard N. Zito will be the main speaker. Students from DeFranco Elementary and Faith Christian schools will read their winning essays. An oratorical presentation will be given by Drew Wortman, a student at Bangor Area Middle School. Wreaths will be placed on the war monuments. If rain, the community services will be held indoors at the post home at 143 Garibaldi Ave.

TATAMY | Tatamy will hold Memorial Day services at 1 p.m. in the municipal building. Officials will pay tribute to all who have served. Refreshments follow.

UPPER MT. BETHEL TWP. | The American Legion Memorial Day service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Mount Bethel War Memorial next to the cemetery, on Route 611. Parade formation will be at the Mt. Bethel firehouse at 10:30 a.m.

WEST BANGOR | The West Bangor Memorial Association will hold its annual Memorial Day program 11 a.m. at the memorial site at Second Street. The speaker will be David A. Mettin, chief of the Slate Belt Regional Police Department. The Roper Quartet will offer musical selections. Tanner Barr and Gianna Greggo, both students at Pen Argyl Area High School, will give recitations of the Gettysburg Address and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole and Kyle Schmidt will play taps. In case of rain, services will be held at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church social hall, Verona Drive, West Bangor.
