On March 8th Philadelphia lost a war hero, the iconic William “Wild Bill” Guarnere.   Wild Bill, a South Philadelphia native, was a member of the storied Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army during World War II, where he was wounded in action and lost a leg.

Guarnere, the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, went on to become an advocate for our Wounded Warriors. Likewise, he was always a frequent outspoken supporter of our men and women in uniform. Sgt. Guarnere wrote the book Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends: Two WWII Paratroopers from the Original Band of Brothers Tell Their Story.  He most famously was portrayed by actor Frank John Hughes in the 2001 Emmy Award Winning HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

The Guarnere family will be holding a memorial service in his honor on Tuesday, April 29th at the Kimmel Center (doors open at 7:00pm) to celebrate not just his heroism, but also his incredible life. Due to the popularity of his story, a large space was reserved to accommodate his family members, friends, and supporters. Admission is FREE and tickets are being distributed by the KimmelCenter. Click here for tickets and seating chart

Invited guests include: Tom Hanks, Frank John Hughes, Matthew Leitch, Michael Cudlitz, Dom Giordano, Joe Piscopo, other Radio and TV Personalities as well as Councilmen, Mayors, and other Dignitaries.

We are looking for help to give Wild Bill the send-off he so rightfully deserves.  Donations are needed to offset the cost of the memorial service and are being accepted online at www.youcaring.com/wildbillmemorial or mailing a check to the Wild Bill Memorial Fund at the address provided. There will also be a non-profit charity in the same name being formed and will be established soon to carry on the name of this Great American Hero
