MJC MOH POSTER 1-26-15The Michael J. Crescenz Memorial Foundation will be dedicating a larger-than-lifestatue of the only Philadelphia residet to receive the MOH for action during the Vietnam War. The dedication will be held on April 24 at noon at the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Penn’s Landing.

A small number if honored speakers will address the crowd. The Phila. Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial is located at Front and Spruce Streets, Phila., Pa., 19147. If interested in participating in the FLAG LINE, be there, with your 3 x 5 flag and in line by 11:15am.  The ceremony begins at 12 noon. (Escort of Statue coming in on Friday, see other posting)

The foundation is composed of veterans and has raised the needed funds since Dec 2014. The statue was designed and sculpted by local sculptor Chad Fisher.

The statue was created, to honor Michael J. Crescenz who received the medal posthumously for eliminating three machine gun bunkers which had halted the advance of his company on Nov. The 19-year-old Army corporal was a 1966 graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School.

“We chose the site of the Memorial because we wanted to place Michael’s statue in a place of honor with his 647 brothers,” noted Tom Roberts, the chairman of the foundation. “The outpouring of support we’ve received in such a short time for this project has been extremely gratifying.”

The ceremony will feature remarks by Thomas Roberts, Charles Crescenz,( Michael’s older brother) who served as a Marine in Vietnam; Ed Prendergast CD Class of 66 and William “Doc”Stafford, who was the medic that attempted to treat Michael for his ultimately fatal wounds.

The 8.5-foot bronze statue which depicts Michael in combat gear charging the enemy with an M-60 machine gun, will be installed on a pedestal on the south side of the Memorial. The VA Medical Center was renamed for Michael last May
