Bio – Born- Sept. 9, 1925, Whitney, PA. Westmoreland County.E ntered army-January,1944. Took 17 weeks of Basic Infantry Training at Camp Blanding, Florida.Joined the 66th. Black Panther Infantry Division- July, 1944, Company – I- 262nd. Inf. On Thanksgiving Day, 1944, went to Southampton England. On Christmas Eve , We boarded the ship Leopoldville to go to Cherbourgh France. The ship was torpedoed in the English Channel seven miles from shore & sunk with 1100 casulties. January 1945 until V-E Day – spent on the frontline along the French coast containing German Sub. Bases.After V-E Day until May 1946 – spent time in Vienna, Austria. Returned to the U.S. in May & was discharged at Fort Dix N.J. May 16, 1946.During his was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge & others. At the present time his name is being processed to receive the French Legion Merit of Honor, due in November. Unfortunately they just found out that Mr. Franks is loosing his eye sight and not in the best of health lets give him one hell of an honor ride to show him we really truly care and appreciate his sacrifices.
