Join us as Dr. William Blair, Director of the Richards Civil War Era Center and author of WITH MALICE TOWARD SOME: TREASON AND LOYALTY IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA, reveals why the rebels didn’t hang but how they faced power politics in a cornerstone amendment of the U.S. Constitution. PUNISHING THE REBELS: A NEW LOOK AT THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT
Despite many advocates for executions, no rebel hanged for treason after the American Civil War. But this does not mean that they escaped punishment. Where we’ll find the best articulation of how the United States punished the rebels is in the Fourteenth Amendment–a device that’s little understood for how it channeled the cries for vengeance into a document that met the rituals of a democratic legal culture.
