WALTER (WALT) FULMER, SR. Walt was a Corporal in the Regular Army and served for 7 years. During WWII he drove a tank in the Army as a Corporal. Walt was also a member of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, until his discharge in 1950. Walt was part of the 103rd Engineer Combat Battalion. The 103rd Engineer Combat Battalion was activated on 11-15-1942 and after nearly two years of training, departed the United States for Europe on September 11, 1944. Walt served in France and Germany. As German resistance disintegrated, the 103d reached the Rhine Valley, 23 March, and engaged in mopping up operations in the plain west of the Rhine River. In April 1945, it received occupational duties until 20 April when it resumed the offensive, pursuing a fleeing enemy through Stuttgart and taking Münsingen on 24 April. On 27 April, elements of the division entered Landsberg, where Kaufering concentration camp, a subcamp of Dachau, was liberated. The men of the division crossed the Danube River near Ulm on 26 April. On 3 May 1945, division captured Innsbruck, Austria with little to no fighting. The 103d linked up with the 88th Infantry Division which had been fighting its way north, up the Italian peninsula at the Brenner Pass over the Italian/Austrian border. After Victory in Europe Day the division received occupational duties until it left for home and inactivation. He worked for and retired from the Railroad and was a member of the Teamster’s Union Local 830. He does not have any known contact with any family. Walt is soon to be without his home. Applications to assisted living communities have been made today 6-2-14 and hoping for fast placement. Walt gets around in his electric wheelchair that he calls his “scooter”. Walt’s excited about moving in hopes of connecting with other WWII Veterans. Posted at http://www.warriorswatch.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=592
