Topic – The Mütter Museum at War: What a medical collection can tell us about United States military history

Monday, October 15, 2018

Reception – 5:30 PM

Program – 6:00 PM

The Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, founded as a collection of pathological anatomy in 1863 by Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter, is the largest and best-known medical collection in the United States. The College, including the museum and Historical Medical Library, is a National Historic Landmark as the “Birthplace of American Medicine.®” The collections today are used for public education, clinical and historical research. Members of the College (founded in 1787) have not only created the “firsts” of American medicine, but also went to war as surgeons. In this illustrated talk, museum and library director Robert Hicks, PhD, visits artifacts associated with each war in our history, and highlights their value in illuminating historical events.

Our Guest Speaker is Robert D. Hicks, PhD is the director of the Mütter Museum and Historical Medical Library, William Maul Measey Chair for the History of Medicine, of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He holds a doctorate in maritime history from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom, and degrees in anthropology and archaeology from the University of Arizona. He is the editor of Civil War Medicine: A Surgeon’s Experience (Indiana University Press, forthcoming).
