Guest Speaker: Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D
In his “INTO THE STORM” presentation, Rabbi Lance Sussman offers a sweeping look at the role Jews played in World I from 1914 to 1919. In his PowerPoint, Rabbi Sussman examines how Jews participated on the frontline and on the home front on all sides of the conflict. Approximately 1.5 million Jews and tens of thousands perished. The presentation will also include a discussion of the Balfour Declaration and Russian Revolution of 1917.
Rabbi Sussman is currently a candidate for admission to the Union League. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and after three years was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated cum laude with a BA in Religious Studies. While attending Franklin and Marshall, he also studied Hebrew language at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1975 to 1987, he attended Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, in Cincinnati, OH, a rabbinical seminary for North American Reform Judaism. He received a Masters of Arts in Hebrew Letters in 1979 and was ordained as a Rabbi in June, 1980. After ordination, he remained at Hebrew Union College where he earned a Ph.D. in American Jewish History.
Rabbi Sussman began his service as the eighth Senior Rabbi of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in 2001. The congregation was founded in 1847 with many members fighting for the Union during the Civil War. A renowned author and dynamic lecturer, Rabbi Sussman has published numerous books and articles,
Including Sharing Sacred Moments (a collection of his sermons), and served as an editor of Reform Judaism in America: A Biographical Dictionary and Sourcebook.
