Jobs, benefits and more for veterans coming to Moorestown

MOORESTOWN — Calling all veterans in need of a job and a little freshening up.

Employers, veterans’ organizations and a host of others have signed up to take part in a free Veterans Benefits and Job Expo on Nov. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community House on Main Street. All veterans are welcome to attend.

The brainchild of Moorestown High School senior Madeleine Morlino, the expo, which is being held two days before Veterans Day, will offer plenty of opportunities to veterans and even prepare them to land a job.

“The main purpose of the event is to provide veterans jobs, especially now that the unemployment is quite high,” Madeleine said. “We have 10 companies so far that are coming with jobs, and they’re big companies like Bank of America, PNC, Workforce Opportunity Service, Defense Contractor Management Agency, AnnieMac Mortgage, and a bunch of companies that have multiple jobs.”

With the help of fellow high school students from Moorestown, Madeleine, whose father served in the Air Force for 23 years, organized the event to connect veterans with not only a place of employment but also with some fresh digs.

“We got 200 suits donated by Men’s Warehouse to the veterans,” she said. “I was shocked. It’s amazing.”

And to ensure the clothes fit right, Suiting Warriors will be there to make sure everyone finds the right-size suit.

To top it off, free haircuts will be available to those in attendance, thanks to a family member from Hair Quarters Unisex Salon in Mantua.

“My cousin’s wife, Katelynn Morlino, is shutting down her store that day and coming up to give dry haircuts for free to the veterans,” Madeleine said, along with coupons to get another cut later at Great Clips.

While the expo seems to be on the mark these days, it definitely didn’t start out that way.

After enlisting the help of several Moorestown High seniors and a family friend over the summer, the students soon learned that putting on an event of this caliber isn’t easy.

“We spent at least two days — all nine of us calling (potential employers),” Madeleine said. “We called about 300 major companies, both local and national, and we had zero people saying yes. It was definitely a little frustrating.”

Then finally, PNC Bank agreed to attend, and quickly other companies and organizations followed.

The youngest volunteer for the expo, Moorestown resident Craig Ambrose, a freshman at St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, Atlantic County, was more than willing to lend a hand.

“I would do anything for the veterans,” Craig said. “They risk their lives for our country, and that means everything to me.”

His mother, Sue, said all the students should be proud of the effort to assist those who served.

“What’s going on today, I think the veterans need more attention than they’re getting and more TLC, and I’m happy the kids realize that,” Ambrose said.

As for Madeleine, she and the rest of the group look forward to seeing as many veterans as possible come out.

“I hope we’re inundated with veterans,” she said. “There are so many jobs available at this event, and knowing that I could potentially help just one veteran provide food for his family is what is really important to me.”
