As part of our mission to promote engaged citizenship, the Freedoms Foundation created a unique and inspiring Medal of Honor Grove dedicated to the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor- the nation’s highest award for valor.
Located on the Freedoms Foundation’s Valley Forge campus, the Medal of Honor Grove is a 52-acre woodland dedicated to honoring every Medal of Honor recipient. A one-acre area within the Grove is dedicated to each state, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. All 52 acres were dedicated during formal ceremonies attended by the State’s Governor, Lieutenant Governor or U.S. Senator.
A focal point of each area is an obelisk patterned after the Washington Monument. Each obelisk is adorned with the State seal, dedication plaque and a list of Medal of Honor recipients from that state. In most cases, a tree marker is placed beside a planting for each recipient, along with the name, rank, unit, date and place of action for the recipient.
In April of 1997, the Freedoms Foundation dedicated America’s Walk of Honor to provide visitors with a chance to walk the grounds of the Medal of Honor Grove. Famous American artist Peter Max, whose images of Liberty and America have become known worldwide, designed the first stone on America’s Walk of Honor.
