Dog Tag of Danny Gaddis returned to family
2018 – The dog tag of Danny Gaddis has finally made its way home – due in part to his comrade, Billy Phillips .
While researching and trying to locate Danny and/or family, we ran across a friend of a friend ( Ian Hans Lichterman ), Billy Phillips, who served with Danny in the 282nd Assault Helicopter Co. Danny was his Crew Chief, Billy was his door gunner aboard a Huey helicopter flying out of Marble Mountain Air facility outside of DaNang in 1968-69. They flew many combat hours together, even being shot down a few times.
Billy had fond memories, documents and photos of Danny – which helped us to locate Danny’s family. Unfortunatley, Danny had passed away in 1998.
Danny’s dog tag journey home began in 1993 when Gaddis’ dog tag made its way to the USA by a retired Police Chief and Vietnam Veteran, who was in Vietnam as logistics support coordinator for a group called Operation Smile. In the streets outside his hotel, he met villagers who had what appeared to be old, rusty American dog tags. He brought them home and later gave them to us to try and locate and return them
We are happy to report we were able to return Danny’s dog tag to his sister, Dona Maines, and family for the holidays!
